So apparently some of our Protestant friends are really getting rediclous now, they have been showing me pictures like the ones below saying it is a Satanic Hand sign.

Does this “hand sign” (though it was probably not even an intential sign on the part of the Holy Father IMH) mean anything in history or Europe?

(wont let my post image on here, just google “Pope Hand Sign”)

I know of two different hand signs that are alike or the same. One is the “devil horns” hand sign which is associated with rock and metal music, and one is the “hang 'em horns” which is a big hand symbol for Texas. I don’t know why the Pope is using it.

Well, the same websites that insist the pope is flashing Satanic hand signals also accuse George W. Bush of doing the same thing… except the websites ignore that Bush is, of course, from Texas, and one of his daughters attended the University of Texas – where that gesture is a symbol of the UT Longhorns. Sooo, I don’t think I’d place too much faith in those websites, kwim?

Anyway, Wikipedia gives a variety of uses for the gesture that are non-Satanic: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sign_of_the_horns

I googled what you suggested-see, thinking that perhaps the Pope was using the sign for ‘I love you’ in American Sign Language? I believe that the thumb would be extended as well, and while the pic is blurry, it looks like the pope had his thumb extended…

-just a thought…the rest is pure silliness, I’d gather.

-ran across another explanation…hope it’s not the case, however, for the pope’s sake…

Oh my gosh, how ridiculous. He’s *waving * for goodness sake. Like when you wave “bye bye” to a child.

He’s *waving *and the photo image is mid-wave.

Um, has anyone checked on the flexibility of this old man’s hands? It’s not unusual for joints to become stiff and fingers to not all move at the same time when you get older. Besides in all these pictures it just looks like I look when I get hand cramps, and I’m not that old yet, this is truly silly.

This is so stupid. If you actually look at the picture above, the Pope is “mid-way” of waving.

He’s also an old man, he’s not as flexible with his joints. 👍

Yea he is waving, just not moving the pinky and index as far with the red of his hand. Just the way the camera snapped the picture, was in a devil horn or Texas horn form. No Biggie, people like to make small issues into Major…" I told you so!! " Moments. 🤷

Remember its called Protestantism for a reason, some people just like to protest regardless of the merits of the argument.

I had an “evangelical” once tell that the Popes hat was initially worn by pagans, therefore Pope = Pagan. I pointed out that trousers were also initially worn by pagans, and that for the sake of their soul I hope they didn’t ever wear Jeans 😃

obviously photoshopped - look at the scale of head/hands - his head does not fit the picture.
Zoom in and see digitised evidence…
FAKE!!!

Look at the skin tone too. The Holy Father has pale skin and the hands are reddish, sunburnt color.

Every denomination has its lame stereotypes, like Catholics who think Protestants are “protesting” Catholicism all the time. Most Anglicans I’ve gotten to know don’t think about Catholicism hardly ever. They don’t wake up with a passion for hippie protests against Rome

Protest: A formal objection, especially one by a group; A collective gesture of disapproval, sometimes violent; to make a strong objection; to affirm something; to object to

If there was no aspect of the True Church they objected to they would be Catholic, until then they will always be protesting.

The Orthodox Church objects formally to papal claims and collectively disapproves of many Catholic doctrines (mostly about the papacy and filioque, etc.), strongly objects, so I guess by your definition here by Websters or whomever you’re using, the Orthodox Churches should be changed to the Eastern Protestant Church of Constantinople, or Latvia, or Russia, etc. :p:rolleyes:

Indeed you are correct; all non Catholics are protesting against the one true faith, perhaps your qualm is with every historian and academic that has chosen to use the term “Protestant” for the last 500 years or so, believe it or not I was not the source of this expression 😃
