It was always apparent to me that if one is going to “witness” to others, and share their faith, it’s a bit necessary to have a bit of background on the listener’s beliefs. Most Christians though, by virtue of their devotion to their own faith, don’t learn about other religions.

While this is understandable, to better spread the gospel, as I’ve been led to believe is rather important, one must have a cursory knowledge of other belief systems.

Satanism in particular is targeted as being particularly spiritually harmful, even by pagans of other classifications. Something that isn’t very common knowledge is that there are several different kinds of Satanism.

First, there is Theistic Satanism, characterized by actual deity worship of “Satan.” This variety of Satanism most clashes with Christian belief, as Theistic Satanists often believe that the anti-Christ will succeed, and Satan’s worshipers will therefore inherit the Earth. Some schools of Theistic Satanism claim that Jehovah was in fact created by Lucifer, and usurped his place. Persons depicted as good in the bible are therefore thought of as evil, working toward enslaving most people in hell.

Another school of Theistic Satanism is Luciferianism. Luciferiansim is characterized by reverence for the light-bearing qualities of Lucifer. Curiosity, free-thought, and breaking from the norm are stressed as all-important and vital aspects of life. In this way, Luciferians believe that Lucifer was unjustly cast out of heaven for thinking differently. There are Gnostic sects of Luciferianism stressing the pursuit of absolute truth as the highest goal in life, more important than any deity worship. Luciferianism and Christianity are not seen by Luciferians as mutually exclusive belief systems, as Gnosis, Absolute Truth, can be seen as the purest expression of God.

There are then the Atheistic schools of Satanism:

The most well known is LaVeyan Satanism. LaVeyan Satanism places high stress on individualism and self-sufficiency and -satisfaction. LaVeyan Satanists recognize no deity beyond themselves, taking an existentialist view of God: As we can not be sure that anything exists besides ourselves, we can’t be sure that we are not the closest thing to God that there is. Therefore, LaVeyan Satanists consider themselves gods, and everyone else is also their own god. Therefore, LaVeyan philosophy revolves heavily around respect for oneself and others, as we are all gods, deserving of respect. Contrary to popular belief, LaVeyan Satanism expressly forbids the sacrifice of animals, and the harming of children. The greatest sin a LaVeyan Satanist can commit is blindly following the crowd, and doing something simply because he is told to.

Another form of Atheistic Satanism is Symbolic Satanism. Symbolic Satanism is reverence of Satan not as a deity, but as a representation of human nature, which is held by adherents to to be hedonism. Satan is seen as a symbol of non-conformity, and a positive influence. Many symbolic Satanists are actually anti-theistic, instead of the apathy of atheism, anti-theists are opposed to the notion of a deity, and will argue the point against them.

And unfortunately, we also have what is referred to as “casual” or “adolescent” Satanism. Casual Satanists use the symbols of Satanism to impress or intimidate while expressing no interest in the actual philosophy. Most teenage Satanists fall into this category. This form of Satanism is mostly harmless, and usually characterizes a dysfunctional need for attention. But in groups, these types of individuals will strive to impress each other, leading to dangerous behaviors such as animal sacrifice, self mutilation or torture. Many casual Satanists suffer from various psychological or personality disorders. These are also the Satanists that the average person hears most about in the news or in urban legends.

I simply thought that this information could be useful to some users at CAF. I also believe that knowledge is its own reward, so I thought this would be well-appointed.

Non-theistic varients of Satanism are Atheistic at their core, so they also clash head on with Christianity.

As for the gnostics, they are an abomination.

Yes, Non-Theistic Satanism IS Atheistic.

And by Gnostics, I assume you mean the variants in which Truth is found internally through self-deification?

No by gnostics I mean a religion which believes in two Gods, one evil creator God, and one benevolent God who is villified by Christians and Jews.

Some of Gnostic thought, as I understand it, involves an IMPERFECT creator deity, not necessarily an evil one.

But most Gnosticism holds that the creator deity is the perfect and benevolent deity, while the second is evil and inferior.

Additionally, much Gnostic thought is dualist, espousing belief in two equal deities, one good and one evil, and the two are absolute opposites.

For the sake of debate, I will say that this view COULD be argued to be analogous of the Christian God and Devil, though I am not making that claim.

To my knowledge virtually all of Christian thought holds that the Devil is inferior to God, but the problem is then why God allows the Devil to exist?

Is it because God is not able to stop the Devil, or because God chooses not to?

Either raises serious questions about God’s power and nature.

Depends on how you define “evil”, in all gnostic documents I’ve read it’s described as an abomination, and its desires run counter to what is good for humanity.

No. The original diety is perfect and benevolent, it is however that second evil and inferior diety who is the creator.

Not equal, no.

What argument? And yes, “the devil” is the normal equvilization of the demiurge. However God is also the equivalent of the demiurge.

That has little to do with what you posted in the first post. In fact it would be a question best asked in the apologetics forum.

Satanism is evil because it fixates on evil and makes of evil good. To fixate on Satan or to change him into something good or to change his character into something it is not is evil and a trick of Satan himself. May every Satanist be won for Jesus Christ by the holy prayers of the Holy Church.

This is a good overview of satanism. (ironicly) As a former satanist I have found it easier to talk to satanists now that I am a catholic than when I was into all that stupid stuff. Most satanists will have a moral outlook revolving around the 7 deadly sins which they view as virtues. When talking with a satanist one should realise they have gone to this philosophy looking for power to give their lives meaning. It is not having a purpuse that they have started looking for meaning in self-serving behavour, which drags them down into a pit of even more self-serving behavour. one of the main reason they have not embraced Christ as Lord and Savoiur is becuse no one has ever explained it to them becuse they really love theses people. It is the lack of love which drives them into a dark self love. It took a recovering crack head who had spent most of his life in prison telling me the gosple to shake me out of my satanic will to power mind set (if this guy most would view as scum could learn to love maybe there really is some thing to this jesus guy-was my thinking at the time).

That actually is a pretty good description of most Satanists, and a pretty good way to approach them.

I will also say that MOST Satanists don’t feel loved, which led them into such a self-centric philosophy. But I will disagree that Satanists are Satanists because they have not been told about the love of Jesus.

I was an active member of a very tight-knit non-denominational youth group for many years, and I never felt anything. I stayed in the group to help my friends in their faiths, as I struggled to find my own identity. It wasn’t from lack of exposure that I now identify mostly as a LaVeyan Satanist.

And I will also disagree that Satanism is always about power. To me, it is all about respect, for myself and others. In fact, the Eleven Satanic Commandments of the Earth (except for number seven) are concerning respect for yourself, others and animals:
"The Eleven Satanic Rules of the Earth" from The Satanic Bible by Anton Szandor LaVey:
  1. Do not give opinions or advice unless you are asked.
  2. Do not tell your troubles to others unless you are sure they want to hear them.
  3. When in another’s lair, show them respect or else do not go there.
  4. If a guest in your lair annoys you, treat them cruelly and without mercy.
  5. Do not make sexual advances unless you are given the mating signal.
  6. Do not take that which does not belong to you, unless it is a burden to the other person and they cry out to be relieved.
  7. Acknowledge the power of magic if you have employed it successfully to obtain your desires. If you deny the power of magic after having called upon it with success, you will lose all you have obtained.
  8. Do not complain about anything to which you need not subject yourself.
  9. Do not harm young children.
  10. Do not kill non-human animals unless you are attacked or for your food.
  11. When walking in open territory, bother no one. If someone bothers you, ask them to stop. If they do not stop, destroy them.
You respect yourself because you are a god. Self-harm, such as cutting, is unacceptable, as that disrespects your god, yourself.

You respect others because, while they might not be YOUR god, they ARE a god.

The only time disrespect is acceptable is when you are disrespected, at which point you are free to avenge yourself:
"the Fifth Satanic Statement" from the Satanic Bible by Anton Szandor LaVey:
Satan represents vengeance instead of turning the other cheek!
So, Satanism to me is more about respect than anything.

Respect isn’t treating someone who annoys you “without mercy.”

Most of those have nothing to do with respect. For example, no one here asked for your opinion (#1), and yet no one would deny you have not been by-and-large respectful.

Generally I think it’s some guys pet peeves written out into eleven rules.

Well, we’re free to interpret things as we see them. I’m okay with you and I having differing opinions.

I choose to see these rules as being indicative of mutual respect, because that’s how I apply them. That doesn’t mean that everyone will, or has to, see them in the same way.

I respect someone until they disrespect me, at which point I see no reason to do so any further.

As I see it, religion and philosophy is a very personal thing, and as long as you apply the teachings in a positive way, it doesn’t matter whether you’re precisely right or not.

As I expressed my opinion here on a forum, where the free exchange of ideas is encouraged, I don’t see it as disrespectful to post my opinion unasked.

That was excellent though, I do commend your logic on that point.

👍

Well, we’re free to interpret things as we see them.
Than I dare you to interpret the law of gravity and not be laughed at by every reasonable person in the world.

Study the Natural Moral Law, that law in every man’s heart.
Than study the Ten Commandments which were given to Moses.
Than study the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Many of us Christians have been atheist, agnostic, pagan and so forth…

I do not claim to know about all the religions out there; and all I really need, I have found…in Jesus Christ.

As I am in a process of evolving in my faith, I naturally turn to my Lord to guide me, which has meant peeling away many layers and letting God decide what I no longer need and what
I am to keep.

All any of us can do…is choose…whom we want to follow…

It only took me 43 years…I am one of the lucky ones

Peace and Joy to all

I’ve seen people ON THIS BOARD claim that gravity is a myth. Don’t ask me to find it, because we both know it’s there, and I don’t want to waste the effort.

And I’m not talking about free interpretation of science. I’m talking about religion and philosophy, which are ALL about interpretation.

I just want you to know that I respect your struggle greatly, and respect your decision to settle on Christianity, more because of the struggle that came before it.

I recognize that my spirituality may be a work in progress, and that’s okay with me.

According to you, but not according to the truth.

Religion is a set of beliefs and practices followed by those committed to the service and worship of God. Philosophy is the pursuit of wisdom.

I’ve claimed gravity is a myth before, I don’t know if it was on this board or not, but I was being sarcastic to prove a point. I have little doubt anyone who said similar things was not simply being sarcastic.

As for religion and philosophy being about interpretation, no they aren’t. Religion and philosophy are two different things, although religion always has an attached philosophy (the reverse is not necessarily true). It is only in the Protestant world that people look at religion as something open to interpretation.

Satanism, no matter the form is well named. In particular, these new so-called “Athiestic” versions, which claim to not acknowlege that God (or Satan) exist. Truely, it does align well with exactly what Satan wanted, to lead humanity down a path which would declare God dead, and them selves Gods of their own universes.

It is evil, to be avoided at all costs.

I did not equate the terms religion and philosophy, which is why I said religion AND philosophy instead of religion/philosophy.
