Satanism

It was always apparent to me that if one is going to “witness” to others, and share their faith, it’s a bit necessary to have a bit of background on the listener’s beliefs. Most Christians though, by virtue of their devotion to their own faith, don’t learn about other religions.

While this is understandable, to better spread the gospel, as I’ve been led to believe is rather important, one must have a cursory knowledge of other belief systems.

Satanism in particular is targeted as being particularly spiritually harmful, even by pagans of other classifications. Something that isn’t very common knowledge is that there are several different kinds of Satanism.

First, there is Theistic Satanism, characterized by actual deity worship of “Satan.” This variety of Satanism most clashes with Christian belief, as Theistic Satanists often believe that the anti-Christ will succeed, and Satan’s worshipers will therefore inherit the Earth. Some schools of Theistic Satanism claim that Jehovah was in fact created by Lucifer, and usurped his place. Persons depicted as good in the bible are therefore thought of as evil, working toward enslaving most people in hell.

Another school of Theistic Satanism is Luciferianism. Luciferiansim is characterized by reverence for the light-bearing qualities of Lucifer. Curiosity, free-thought, and breaking from the norm are stressed as all-important and vital aspects of life. In this way, Luciferians believe that Lucifer was unjustly cast out of heaven for thinking differently. There are Gnostic sects of Luciferianism stressing the pursuit of absolute truth as the highest goal in life, more important than any deity worship. Luciferianism and Christianity are not seen by Luciferians as mutually exclusive belief systems, as Gnosis, Absolute Truth, can be seen as the purest expression of God.

There are then the Atheistic schools of Satanism:

The most well known is LaVeyan Satanism. LaVeyan Satanism places high stress on individualism and self-sufficiency and -satisfaction. LaVeyan Satanists recognize no deity beyond themselves, taking an existentialist view of God: As we can not be sure that anything exists besides ourselves, we can’t be sure that we are not the closest thing to God that there is. Therefore, LaVeyan Satanists consider themselves gods, and everyone else is also their own god. Therefore, LaVeyan philosophy revolves heavily around respect for oneself and others, as we are all gods, deserving of respect. Contrary to popular belief, LaVeyan Satanism expressly forbids the sacrifice of animals, and the harming of children. The greatest sin a LaVeyan Satanist can commit is blindly following the crowd, and doing something simply because he is told to.

Another form of Atheistic Satanism is Symbolic Satanism. Symbolic Satanism is reverence of Satan not as a deity, but as a representation of human nature, which is held by adherents to to be hedonism. Satan is seen as a symbol of non-conformity, and a positive influence. Many symbolic Satanists are actually anti-theistic, instead of the apathy of atheism, anti-theists are opposed to the notion of a deity, and will argue the point against them.

And unfortunately, we also have what is referred to as “casual” or “adolescent” Satanism. Casual Satanists use the symbols of Satanism to impress or intimidate while expressing no interest in the actual philosophy. Most teenage Satanists fall into this category. This form of Satanism is mostly harmless, and usually characterizes a dysfunctional need for attention. But in groups, these types of individuals will strive to impress each other, leading to dangerous behaviors such as animal sacrifice, self mutilation or torture. Many casual Satanists suffer from various psychological or personality disorders. These are also the Satanists that the average person hears most about in the news or in urban legends.

I simply thought that this information could be useful to some users at CAF. I also believe that knowledge is its own reward, so I thought this would be well-appointed.
This has been brought up before, and I’m sure more than a few times.

It’s just that not everyone wants to read about Satanism because, well, Satan is our enemy. I don’t mind learning about other religions and we should. But Satanism turns a lot of people off, including me.

Satanism, no matter the form is well named. In particular, these new so-called “Athiestic” versions, which claim to not acknowlege that God (or Satan) exist. Truely, it does align well with exactly what Satan wanted, to lead humanity down a path which would declare God dead, and them selves Gods of their own universes.
Saying that all Atheistic forms of Satanism are “new” is not quite accurate. While LaVeyan Satanism was devised by LaVey in 1966, Atheistic Symbolic Satanism is approximately just as old as Theistic Satanism, both developing as a reaction to Judaism, and facing a resurgence under Christianity.

I understand that. And I’m sure it’s been brought up before. It’s just something I feel I can offer. I don’t want to be a dead-beat on the forum. I’d like to spark conversation as well as take part in it.
Lol, “another’s lair.”
Heh. That bit of diction actually makes me giggle a bit as well.

🙂

Okee dokee, really doesn’t do a lot to Change any of my basic evaluation of it’s worth. One should turn away from this error.

Well of course. As a Christian, I wouldn’t expect any different. And that’s okay. It’s expected that as a Christian you will probably be opposed to Satanism.

What you could probably do so as to not turn people off, is maybe take a few elements of what you’d like to discuss and present them in a not-so-threatening forum. (Meaning take the word Satan out of it when you pose your question or thought).

Then later, depending on how much conversation is going on and where it leads, you can bring it up again saying that it is what Satanists believe or something like that…

I think people would be more receptive to that. And you might get a lot more conversation from a lot of different angles, since on the non-Catholic forums besides other Christians there are Hindu, New Age, pagan, Muslim and others.

But be prepared for conflict, just in case. Even Catholics conflict with other Catholics here, so …

… I’m just sayin’…😉

I thought that it would be acceptable to post something like this in Non-Catholic Religions. I would also rather post exactly what the thread is about in the subject, so that if people don’t want to talk about it, they won’t come.

And I was VERY expectant of negative reactions, trust me.

🙂

One of my good friends is a LaVeyan Satanist. I borrowed and read her Satanic Bible (this was about 2 or 3 years ago, so before I was a Christian.)

Honestly, even prior to be a Christian (I was at the time an agnostic, but exploring different faiths quite openly), I was reminded of the Reese Peanut Butter Cup commercials. Except instead of two people, one eating chocolate and the other peanut butter, it’s a Goth and Ayn Rand.

“You got your anti-Christian imagery in my Objectivism!”
“No, you got your Objectivism in my anti-Christian imagery.”

If the “theistic satanism” you describe is gnostic as you describe, then it is a very young offshoot of a movement slightly younger than Christianity. Most of the ancient versions of gnosticism are long extinct, and I doubt the few which do survive would want to have the title “Satanist” attached to it, and infact one of them often does get that attachment and it very much resents it.

Could you be a bit clearer? I’m not sure if you’re asking a question or making a statement. And in either case, I’m not sure what you’re asking or stating.

Sorry…

I’m making a statement, that “Satanism” is a new movement.

sans delilah,
It actually makes since to call it a new movement. From the standpoint that while some of its elements are centuries old…ie, it use of magic specifically around the use of its enochian calls to using gnostic philosphies as well the over wide spread availability of it has only been a few decades.
Now please note when I refer to Satanisms use of it Enochian calls and Gnostic elements I mean that some actually put a Satanic spin too it to make it workable within their belief system. Just as Enns are used in demonaltry. Though admittedly I doubt Dr. John Dee (The man who received the Enochian language) would be super pleased with it’s current form. This This was a god choice of a forum to post this topic as it is decidely non catholic. 🙂 Good day.

Well… There are a couple of threads like this. What questions or comments do you have about Satanism anyway? Was this just an informative post? I ask because you’re a pagan commenting on Satanism. Even if you were a LaVey Satanist, they’re just self-glorifying Atheists.

THAT was hilarious.

Atheistic Satanism, yes. I’m not arguing that point. Atheistic Satanism was basically founded in 1966 by Anton LaVey. But Theistic Satanism has been around at least as long as the Church has been accusing people of it (which is a LONG time), but most probably longer.

Yes, it was. LaVeyan Satanism is a philosophy which contributes quite a bit to my thought process, as such, I consider myself to be a student in the philosophical school of LaVeyan Satanism.

And as LaVeyan Satanism is less a religion and more of a philosophy, I ascribe my RELIGION to be non-specific pagan, as I practice various forms of mysticism and spellcraft.

I say all of this to clarify where I’m coming from.
Even if you were a LaVey Satanist, they’re just self-glorifying Atheists.
And that is pretty dead-on, really.

No, Theistic Satanism. People can claim what they like, that doesn’t make it so. Like I said, it may hold some heretige in the Gnostic movement, but it certainly wasn’t one of the early gnostic movements, and it certainly didn’t predate them.

If want to get technical, they’re actually suitheists.
