No, nobody has ever commented to me like that. You’re sure they weren’t joking? I might jokingly make a “going in the wrong direction” comment to someone, but never seriously and certainly not to a stranger.
aNOT AT church but if someone is walkng away frm the school where I work in the morning we might say that to each other as a Joke not expecting an explanation.

I wouldn’t take it to seriously We can’t be resposible for what ever others think

People have not said that to me, and I’m sorry they have to you. That is just inappropriate.

Practice “custody of the eyes”… do not look at anyone when emerging, just demurely and humbly walk away, eyes down… … Great thing to do. 👍

This sounds like people should be minding their own business as what one usually sees is not what it really is. Their remarks are totally uncalled for.

Hi there. So I often go to Confession on Saturdays without staying for the 4pm Mass due to other obligations. I do attend Mass on Sundays, of course. In the past several months, I’ve been both surprised and offended by the number of Catholics who, upon seeing me leave the church to walk back to my car, make a negative comment about my not staying for Mass. One woman said rather snidely " Don’t you think you’re going in the wrong direction?" And today a woman said “Not staying for Mass?” Again, these comments were said rather snidely.

Has this happened to you? If so, how do you handle it?
Never happened to me. I am, in fact, surprised to hear that it has happened to you. Many at our parish, and at another local parish that I sometimes go to for confession, do not stay for the vigil Mass. I’d probably say something like “No, will I see you at Mass tomorrow morning?” or “No, I don’t have a reason to fulfill my Sunday obligation by participating in the vigil Mass rather than attending tomorrow morning”-- if I want to give them something to think about.

The peace of Christ,
Mark

Thanks to everyone for your supportive, insightful, and humorous comments. It really helps. I guess what most annoys me is that it’s simply none of their business. I’ll be putting your advice into action soon- can’t wait to see what reactions I get.

This reminds me of the time several years ago when I was grocery shopping and in the alcohol aisle. I was looking for beer to simmer my hot dogs in. (so good) A fellow parishioner, who I don’t even know that well, looked at me and said “no,no,no.” Looking back, I wish I had opened a can of beer and started drinking it right in front of her. She probably would’ve fainted. 😃

You must be a very nice person.🙂

Sometimes people like to pick on a person they think will not give them back a piece of his/her mind.

Some people thrive in being holier or smarter than thou; the attitude they seem to need to make themselves relevant. Otherwise how can we explain unsolicited comment when they do not even know the full picture? 🤷

Interesting you should ask this when this Sunday the Gospel is about Jesus’ parable about the Pharisee and the publican.
hahahahahahahahaaahahahaahahahahahahaahahahaahahahaahaahahahahahahahaha

Perhaps they think you do not know mass is going to follow confession and instead of telling you about mass, they say something sideways, I call it sideways when people choose words in such a way to not offend someone or embarrass them. Or it could be someone who has their own way of seeing things and think why drive to the church twice when you are already there for confession anyway and can attend mass?

No these are parishioners who’ve known me for about 4 years or longer and who know that I sometimes attend the Saturday Vigil.

Their responses came off as snarky and judgmental, which is a shame.

God bless you. 🙂

Yes. I don’t mind responding but I just don’t know what to say as it catches me off guard.
