Well, almost a month ago I moved to a new city for University. I’m trying to find a Church not far away I can get to by bus. The chaplaincy website directs me to a Church that has Saturday mass at 5:00 PM. I got wondering; is Saturday mass acceptable instead of Sunday? I’m really confused

Yes, Saturday evening Mass counts as a Sunday Mass. Everything will be the same, the readings, use of the Gloria, Creed, etc. 👍

A Saturday evening Mass is a Sunday Mass. The two are equal. There’s no difference at all between one or the other.

People have been going to Saturday mass for forty years.
Where have you been?

The Saturday evening Mass is also called the Sunday Vigil. In fact, the Easter Vigil on Saturday is an even more important Mass than the Easter Sunday Mass at our parish. 🙂

As long as the Mass is 4:00PM or later, it’s a Vigil, and thus fulfills your Sunday obligation.

I was…watching EWTN… and one of the priests there did mention that Sunday was the preferred day of worship because it corresponds with the day of Jesus’ resurrection which was celebrated in the early Church.

He said the Saturday Mass was instituted because so many Catholics (in modern society) were being forced to work on Sunday.

He made it seem as if, the Mass on Saturday was for Sunday workers.

I can see his point.

I have to wonder at times if I’m being disrespectful of Sunday worship because Saturday Mass is an easy go for me. I’m winding down my day; I’m geared toward the Mass; there are less young children at that Mass and to be honest it clears all day Sunday out for rest, reading and a family meal.

All that being said, by Jewish observance, sundown on Friday began the Saturday Sabbath. In the same way, Saturday sundown begins the Sunday worship for us.

Yes, Saturday eveing Mass counts for Sunday

FYI - the Divine Office [Liturgy of the Hours - Christian Prayer - however you may call it - or heard it called]

Liturgical time - there is no Saturday Evening prayer as there is for every weekday … Monday through Friday …

On Saturday evening you pray Sunday Evening Prayer I … then on Sunday Evening you pray Sunday Eveing Prayer II

And that used to be the case. In the past, Saturday evening was considered an “anticipated” Mass of Sunday. In the past, it was only permitted for those who were unable to attend on Sunday. But that’s not the case anymore. The Church’s understanding of when Sunday begins has been developing over the past few decades, and returning to a more biblical understanding that the day begins at sunset, when the previous day ends.

The most obvious expression of this renewed understanding is in the new code of canon law (1983) which removed any requirements from the 1917 code (technically, *indults from *the 1917 code) that said the Saturday Mass was limited to necessity. From a liturgical view, Saturday evening is clearly Sunday, as YADA posted.

Yes.

I almost always attend Saturday vigil. It’s very nice to end the week (and the day itself) with Mass. And, during football season, Dh is glued to the games on Sunday–so Saturday works just fine for him. I’m pretty sure the Church didn’t have that as a reason when she wisely instituted Saturday Mass, but it’s been a very happy consequence. 😃

Can. 1248 §1. A person who assists at a Mass celebrated anywhere in a Catholic rite either on the feast day itself or in the evening of the preceding day satisfies the obligation of participating in the Mass.

Give the person a break - they may be a new Catholic or someone who otherwise hasn’t had this explained very well to them.

For example, not seeing the word ‘vigil’ in relation to this Mass they may’ve thought that possibly churches can have Saturday Masses on Saturday evening as well as anticipated Sunday Masses, or something.

yes and in the US it has fulfilled the Sunday obligation for about the last 40 years or so. Perhaps it was not the custom where you come from. But if your chaplain says it is acceptable in your area, it is.

It actually makes more sense to attend mass on Saturday; that way, you are also keeping the Sabbath Day Holy.

We love going to Sarurday evening Mass especially in the fall because there is something more intimate/reflective about attending Mass when it’s dark outside.

I cringe when I read people saying they “always” attend Mass on Saturday.

Unless you’re a hospital worker and you work on Sunday, it should not be the norm.

Sunday is the Lord’s Day and the New Sabbath. It should be made holy!

I also think people who “always” go to the early Sunday Mass to “get it out of the way” need to reexamine.

Sunday Mass at noon or 11AM seems the best spiritual solution for me. It makes Mass the center of your day, typically is the choir Mass so you’ll have the most attention to making it beautiful, and won’t be “out of the way” so you can watch football or do gardening. Sunday is about worshipping God and “getting Mass out of the way” is just about the worse way I can think of doing it.

Don’t foget that in Jewish society, the new day starts after the sun sets. So Jesus could have risen from the dead immediately after sunset. By our count its still Saturday. But by theirs its already Sunday. Although I doubt there was much interest back in the day for worship in the evening, they certainly would have waited 'til morning.

Yes, its a sad development in our society as we get more secular, Sunday is becoming just like any other day

If the Church says its okay, then its okay. We should trust the Church in such matters.

I think an earlier time is a better spiritual solution. First, you make sure that the first thing you do that day is go to Mass. Also, most people would rather sleep in during the weekends. Back in the Philippines Mass late in the afternoon or early evening is common, I can’t remember the last time I went to Mass before 4pm. Because I’d be out Saturday night, I’d get up from bed in time for lunch on Sundays. Thats not a good practice. But now I’m “forced” to wake up early on Sundays for Mass because there is no afternoon Mass in my parish here in Canada. It helps dicipline me for Mass.

As long as the Saturday Mass is truely after 4:30pm it counts for Sunday. That should not be a problem as it is my experience that few if any priests would burden themselves with a Saturday afternoon Mass AND a Saturday evening Mass.

I haven’t been to a Saturday Evening Mass in almost 30 years.

I recall the priest at one church in New England just pre-VII told the congregation that anyone who went to mass later than 9am was guilty of being lazy.
