I am looking to buy my mother a new missal, I wanted to find out since she attends evening mass on a Saturday (5pm) would I have to buy her a daily missal or would I be able to buy a Sunday missal? I don’t foresee her carrying a large daily missal.

So I guess my question is does Saturday evening reading reflect the Sunday readings?

Thanking you in advanced

Daz

Almost all (Sunday) masses celebrated on Saturday evening are indeed that. An anticipated Sunday mass, using the Sunday missal. Only very rarely is there a vigil mass on Saturday evening that would be different: Christmas Eve , Easter Vigil, Pentecost Vigil and I want to saymaybe the Ascension Vigil also? Anyway most Sunday missals should have these vigils also. So you’d be fine with a Sunday missal. 😉

If your mother goes to Mass on Saturday evening it will nearly always be the Sunday mass that is celebrated. Even if the celebration on the Sunday has its own proper vigil Mass that will probably be also found in a Sunday Missal. For example, my Sunday Missal contains all four Masses for Christmas; it contains the Vigil Masses for Ascension and Pentecost. Therefore, I believe a Sunday Missal will be eminently suitable for the purpose you intend.

… the Ascension Vigil also? Anyway most Sunday missals should have these vigils also. …
For reference, these are the Vigil Masses used in the Ordinary Form in the Roman Calendar:
  1. Nativity of the Lord *
  2. Easter (on Holy Saturday after nightfall)
  3. Epiphany (Missale Romanum 3rd ed. - 2002) **
  4. Ascension (Missale Romanum 3rd ed. - 2002) **
  5. Pentecost *
  6. Nativity of St. John the Baptist *
  7. Saints Peter and Paul *
  8. Assumption *
* Optional evening Mass, since 1969
** Optional evening Mass, since 2002
The optional vigil Mass is used on the evening of the day before the Solemnity, either before or after First Vespers (Evening Prayer I) of the Solemnity.

I’d suggest buying her a subscription to Magnificat. They have a large print edition!!
