Should the theme / readings on Saturday be based on the previous Sunday or the upcoming Sunday (the next day)?

Saturday evening Mass is an “anticipated Mass” for Sunday. Times may vary. In my diocese, it is any Mass after 4pm. My friends in the Brooklyn diocese, it’s 5pm (or was last I knew).

The Saturday evening mass is the Vigil Mass for Sunday (for those who cannot make the Sunday mass for acceptable reasons), therefore, readings are read in line with the Sunday Liturgy.

A morning Saturday Mass would have readings for that Saturday, not for the Sunday Mass readings.

You may freely attend mass on Saturday evening or anytime Sunday. The “acceptable reasons” requirement has been purposefully removed from canon law.
