shortly after losing our lovely, traditional pastor/rector, we lost our Saturday Mass. Miss it terribly, want it back, along with our priest!

One must endeavor to think in a charitable way, however difficult that might be. A Priest “can” say more than one Mass per day if necessary. They can also have the Sacrament of Reconcilliation for more than a half an hour on Saturdays. We absolutely must pray for our Bishops and Priests. More and more of the Clergy are opting to celebrating fewer and fewer of the Sacraments but there seems to be time to know sports scores etc. etc… No wonder the sheep are scattering . We know there are “dedicated” Priests out there, so do not be hurt by our posts. You are also prayed for and God knows “who” you are, we just wish you were in “our” parishes. (smile).
Mary, refuge of sinners, pray for us,
Peace on earth to men of good will.

I am so thankful for the priest that recently arrived in our parish! After arriving in his new assignment for only two days he reinstuted the Saturday morning Mass (it had fallen by the wayside for more than a decade). Within a week he had implemented a morning rosary before the beginning of each weekday and Saturday morning Mass. He also began offering confession each weekday and Saturday morning Mass. He immediately began attending a Saturday morning men’s group and then bought the Liturgy of the Hours for each participant. He emails his homilies to all who are interested in receiving them and makes copies available for those who are unable to go online. Since school has begun, there is now a weekly all school Mass (before it was only once a month). He is now investigating remodeling the sanctuary and moving the tabernacle back behind the altar… these are just a few of the highlights. He is truly ministering his flock… the only downside… you would not believe the uncharitable comments that I have heard from some parishioners about this fine priest! They seem to resent… get this… “His holier than thou” attitude… Why? Because he simply and eloquently proclaims the teachings of the church during his reflection of the scriptures during his homilies.
He is one of the "dedicated " priests that you mentioned. Sometimes it seems that the flock has no intention of listening to the shepherd even when he is “dedicated”. We can truly be a stiff necked people!

I really think that part of the problem is that too many priests think that they are binating on Saturday if they have a morning and an evening Mass on Saturday. But this is not the case, for if the evening Mass is for Sunday, then he couldn’t possibly be saying two Masses on Saturday, rather, he’s saying one on Saturday and one on “Sunday.”
Is it not the case? Again, I refer to CIC 202.

While commonly it *seems * the vigil is just Sunday-Mass-on-Saturday, that is not always the case. As a most recent example: When the Solemnity of the Assumption fell on Sunday a few days ago, the proper parts of that celebration *differed * between the vigil and Mass-during-the-day. Yes, the vigil honored the same feast, but it was specifically a Mass said on the evening prior to the feast.

More reliable examples are the vigils of Christmas and Easter, which again have proper Masses to be celebrated chronologically prior to their respective feasts.

I am not a canon lawyer, and I welcome education in this matter.

I don’t know of any churches in the area that have Mass 7 days a week, most skip Wed., Fri. or Sat, whatever is the priest’s day off. Most weddings and funerals here are done by the deacons, unless a Mass is specifically requested. I know of only a couple of parishes that have more than one priest, usually those staffed by religious orders. If you want to attend daily Mass (not a communion service), you have to hop around town and know the schedules. You cannot keep a First Friday or First Saturday devotion in most parishes without shoppign around for Masses (same holds true for confession, know where to go, get their early).
Asquared – I know someone in your part of the world who sees a priest for Mass only once a MONTH! Other Sundays it’s a Communion service. Forget about Saturday Mass or Mass on ANY other day of the week! Pray for vocations!

We do not have Saturday morning Mass but I really wish we did. We have weekday Masses at 8:00 Mon thru Fri but I can’t attend those because I am at work at that time. I only attend Mass once a week, on Sunday. But I would love it if my hometown parish would have it on Saturday mornings so I could get to more than one Mass a week!
One might present some of the responses on this thread to one’s Priest. Our Saturday morning Mass is the best attended of the daily Masses in our parish. It is followed by the novena of the Miraculous Medal and veneration of our first-class relic of St. Catherine Laboure. I am always impressed by the number of men in attendance.

WOW. Yes, it seems that Priests who are “real” shepherds have problems with flocks that have been taught to “play” at being Catholics. Unfortunately these wonderful Priests also often have problems with some Biships. I don’t know any other solution than to make Holy Hours of Reparation and The Rosary. Make sure and tell /beg him to not give up.
Mary, Queen of Martyrs, pray for us.
Peace on earth to men of good will.

Although we do not have Saturday Morning Mass (one priest for over 7,000 Parishioners) we do have a wonderfully Orthodox Catholic Church. Queen of Peace Parish in Ocala FL is primarily made up of Retired Persons , transplanted from the North. Daily Mass is well attended 200 - 300 people. Unlike many Florida Churches ours is Cruciform in shape, pipe organ, statues, Miraculous Medal novena, St. Monica Novena, Chaplet of Mercy, Confessions on Thursday, First Friday Morning, Saturday 2 - 3:45 , or anytime you need/want. And also Perpetual Adoration…a wonderful Priest/Pastor…Liturgy that is “Pure” and according to the GIRM…all are welcome in this place. Blessings.

My parish has two Saturday am Masses routinely (and there may be a wedding or two later in the day, too). We have daily Masses at 6:45am, 7:45am, and 12:10pm, and only the 12:10pm is missing from the Saturday schedule.

Our parish is fortunate that we have daily Mass made available every day. On Saturdays, the Mass is at 8 a.m. and on holidays at 9 a.m. There is also a 5:15 p.m. Mass every day. On Sundays, in addition to the 5:15 p.m. Mass, there are 7 other Masses, including one in Spanish, one in Italian, and one in Croatian. There’s not much excuse here for failing to fulfill one’s weekly obligation.

the parish that i live in now has saturday morning mass occasionally, but there are 2 parishes close by that have a saturday morning mass, so i can go if i want to—sometimes i just wait & go to the saturday evening mass as my saturday mass & go again on sunday for my sunday mass—

For those of you/us that feel we do not have enough priests-how many of you/us can say we have a son or grandson who is a priest? We will get what we want/deserve with regard to priests.

Here in Fort Myers FL we have one or two daily Masses (Monday - Friday) in the Winter and one in the Summer plus an 8:00 AM Mass each Saturday. This schedule is at 5 Parishes within about 20 miles of each other. Most of the Parishes have two Priests. Most of the Priests are well into their late 60’s or early 70’s.

St Raphael in Lehigh Acres has Benediction and a Novena on Tuesday after Mass and my Parish, Blessed Pope John XXIII. in Fort Myers has a Novena after the Saturday Mass. ALL Parishes recite the Rosary before the Masses on Monday - Saturday.

Anyone who says that priests are too lazy to offer Saturday Mass on their “day off” does not know what a priest’s workload is often like! We are blessed in my parish to have Mass every Saturday at 8:00 AM, but we have a funeral at 10:00 AM and a wedding at 2:00 PM with almost as much regularity. A priest’s day off is inevitably a weekday, and they deserve it after a busy weekend.

We are very blessed with daily Mass, including Saturday, at 8 am. followed by the rosary.
We also have Stations of the Cross on the first Friday of each month.
The plenary indulgences really flow on the fiirst weekend of each month.

My parish has two daily Masses (Mon-Fri) and one Mass Saturday morning at which time the Rosary is also said. (The Rosary is also said on Tuesday evenings.) We have one Vigil Mass Saturday evening and five Masses on Sunday morning. On First Friday we have Benediction and Adoration but no Mass, which I would prefer. We are lucky to have 3 priests which I am sure helps. However, I can’t imagine a priest not wanting to say Mass on his “day off.” I thought a priest had to say Mass every day? Does anybody know if this is correct or not?

My mother lives in the Pocon Mountains, and they have a small (almost seasonal) parish. I think they have daily Mass Mon & Tues and Thurs & Fri. The pastor is “off” on Wednesdays. they don’t have a Saturday morning Mass but do have a Vigil. Then they have two Masses on Sunday mornings - 8:00 and 10:30. Recently, he has been asking the parishioners to be more generous in the collection. However, some of my mother’s friends have started going to neighboring parishes because they have more Masses on Sunday mornings, especially later ones. That could be why there is less in the collection basket.

After our Stations of the Cross we have Benediction and Adoration also. We do have a perpetual Chapel with prayers said 24/7. I truly believe then more the church has to offer, the better Masses are attended. We also have five very full Masses on Sunday. It is a large parish and everyone is really friendly. I felt I had come home the minute I stepped into the Church.

For me I see it as a heavy burdon for our Pastor. He is the only priest in the Parish, and the only day that is not offered for a daily Mass is Thursday. He will cancel saturday morning mass though if there are conflist with a funeral or wedding.

We had our Saturday morning Mass taken away in June.

Sometimes a retired priest, when he is in town, will offer this Mass for us but at a chapel across town. It is considered a ‘private’ Mass and not the responsibility of the parish. I hardly know what to do with myself on Saturday mornings now and was very much saddened when we lost the Mass. In addition to the ‘priest shortage’ is the shortage of priests willing to be available for sacraments.

Ave Maria!

Before our Priest retired, we had Mass 7 days a week, and also an evening Saturday Mass. After he retired and we got a new Priest, we no longer had Saturday morning, or Monday morning Masses.
Recently our new Priest got an assistant Priest and we now have Mass 7 days a week again.

:blessyou:
Annie
