In Epistle to the Hebrews, chapter 4, says that Christians should pray on Saturday. What day is the Sabbath, Saturday or Sunday? Why do most Christians worship on Sunday?
thank you!

Hebrews, chapter 4, says nothing about Christians praying on Saturday but they ought to pray on Saturday … and on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, on every day of the week, constantly (1 Thessalonians 5:17), night and day (1 Thessalonians 3:10; 1 Timothy 5:5).

The Sabbath is the seventh day, Saturday or more precisely from sundown on Friday until sundown on Saturday.

I suppose Christians worship on the first day of the week, Sunday, chiefly to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead on the first day of the week (Mark 16:9), arguably the most important event in human history.

Though Catholics are only required by church law (canon law) to attend a worship service (Mass) on Sundays or a vigil Mass on Saturday evenings, Catholics are encouraged to go beyond this bare minimum and attend daily Masses.

Saturday is the Sabbath, and it is a rest commanded to the Hebrews by God, but it is not enough:

Hebrews 4:8 For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day.

Who said it is not enough?

For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief. Hebrews 4:10, 11

The issue is not one of which day but which Tradition?

If we were to stay “ligit” then all of the Mosaic Laws would still apply (even modern Jews do not follow all of them… quite interestesting!); in the old economy it was said: “…an eye for and eye…” we no longer live that economy; in the old economy we were to worship Yahweh God in the Temple and the synagogues–the Temple is gone and the local places of worship were death traps for the new economy followers (those of the Way: Christians)–and Jesus was very succinct about the New Covenant and its new form of worship (St. John 4:23-24; 3:3-21).

Clearly, there was slow and fast change… at times some that were part of the Way thought that they should hold on to the Mosaic Laws (over 600 most salient ones–but I undertand that there were hundreds more) and eventually the issues that arose cause the Apostles to introduce new Doctrines (Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 16:2; Acts 13:37-39; Romans 6:14-23; Galatians 3:7-29; 5:7-25); the issue, again, is worship… if you want to glorify Yahweh God by abiding in the Sabbath (Sabbath means day of rest not Saturday), why not do so in the Sabbath of He Who is Lord of the Sabbath (St. Matthew 12:6-8)–as St. Paul tells us:

5 One person thinks that some days are holier than others, and another thinks them all equal. Let each of them be fully convinced in his own mind. 6 The one who makes special observance of a particular day observes it in honour of the Lord. So the one who eats freely, eats in honour of the Lord, making his thanksgiving to God; and the one who does not, abstains from eating in honour of the Lord and makes his thanksgiving to God. 7 For none of us lives for himself and none of us dies for himself; 8 while we are alive, we are living for the Lord, and when we die, we die for the Lord: and so, alive or dead, we belong to the Lord. 9 It was for this purpose that Christ both died and came to life again: so that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living. (Romans 14:5-9)

Interstingly enough, the Catholic Church celebrates Sabbath on the Day of the Lord (the day of Jesus’ Resurrection, which as it turns out it is the first day of the week) and she makes Jesus the Center of Worship not the Sabbath–conversely, the other six days are also celebrated in the same manner: Christ Centered Worship!

The argument of Saturday vs. Sunday is very similar to that of the practice of celibacy: the opponents loath the Catholic view on celibacy yet ignore St. Paul’s personal practice and his argument for it (1 Corinthians 7:8, 25-40)–a practice, which I suspect, comes from St. Paul’s emulation of Christ Jesus!
