When did the Saturday Vigil Mass come into usage? I am a convert and I had a friend recently tell me that it was a product of Vatican II. Is this correct?

That does not seem right to. I see aspect of a Saturday Vigil in the liturgy of the Hours, which I pray as well as the some other vague historical references about when a Mass meets our Sunday obligation.
