He’s Saudi author and cleric, “Dr.” Muhammad Al-'Arifi, who in a remarkable segment broadcast on Saudi and Kuwaiti television in September, counseled young Muslim men on how to treat their wives.
“Admonish them – once, twice, three times, four times, ten times,” he advised. “If this doesn’t help, refuse to share their beds.”
And if that doesn’t work?
“Beat them,” one of his three young advisees responded.
“That’s right,” Al-'Arifi said.

Interesting advice. Does anyone expect similar advice from a Vatican source, the Southern Baptist Convention, the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, etc., anytime soon

I think the most disturbing part of the interview is where the guy says, “He should not beat her like he would beat an animal or a child – slapping them right and left.” So you’re supposed to beat a child even worse than your wife? You’re supposed to beat a child like an animal?

Only Islam could come up with something this sick.

Well they claim that Islam is ‘fair’ to women.
So if this is the case, can a woman beat up her husband as well?

Well its the rules in the quran to beat your wife.

[4:34] The men are made responsible for the women, ** and GOD has endowed them with certain qualities, and made them the bread earners. The righteous women will cheerfully accept this arrangement, since it is GOD’s commandment, and honor their husbands during their absence. If you experience rebellion from the women, you shall first talk to them, then (you may use negative incentives like) deserting them in bed, then you may beat them. If they obey you, you are not permitted to transgress against them. GOD is Most High, Supreme.

As you can see, its in the quran…

**Thanks so much for point this out and I agree with you 100%, lhowever, et’s examine two things, Honor and what it meant in the Quran and as we Muslims understood it and the the concept of beating and how this is done, a clue…“beat her with your Miswak”…once you understand these two then you will most definitely appreciate the value behind the Quran versus and it’s teachings.

Can I challenge you to give some time to the above two points, study thoroughly and consult with an Islamic scholar or a knowledgeable Imam at any of the local Mosques in your city or city, if there is one otherwise let me know so I can guide you to correct sites.

Thanks once again**.

I cannot believe Muslim men would beat their wives with miswaks. It’s a twig - used as a toothbrush.

You get this disobedient wife who just won’t obey you - so you admonish her, separate her and finally, finally, as a last resort - you ‘beat’ her with a toothbrush?

Your missing the point, the point is, you are still allowed to beat a women! Do you really think its ok to beat a women?

The Quran does not mention beating with the miswak. It merely says a Muslim can ‘beat’ (idribo) his wife.

How did this miswak nonsense come about? According to Tabari, it was a ruling by Islamic jurists. However, this has passed as if a command from Allah when in reality it was merely what some imams said, no doubt embarrassed at the blatant wife-beating verse.

Does a wife have the right to refuse sex with her husband?

Q. If at a particular time, a lady has no desire for sex with her husband, but he insists for it, what is her right of refusal in this context?

Abdul Wahabs

A. If a husband expresses his desire for sexual intercourse with his wife, and asks her to fulfill his need, then she should fulfill her husband’s desire, and she has no right to refuse him or deprive him of his need (unless of course if she is undergoing her monthly menstruation period or is down with illness).

Islam encourages and insists on chastity and fidelity. Islam prohibits and condemns illicit sexual relations, extra-marital affairs, pre-marriage sex, fornication, adultery, prostitution, pornography and promiscuity. It is for this reason that a wife is bound to fulfill her husband’s sexual desires so as to prevent him from straying.

Narrated Abu Huraira

Allah’s Apostle said, “If a husband calls his wife to his bed (i.e. to have sexual relations) and she refuses and causes him to sleep in anger, the angels will curse her till morning.”
(Sahih Al-Bukhari Vol.4 Hadith No.460 & Sahih Muslim Vol.2 Hadith No.3368)

Narrated Abu Huraira

The Messenger of Allah (swt) said: By Him in whose hand is my life, when a man calls his wife to his bed, and she does not respond, the One Who is in the heaven is displeased with her until he (her husband) is pleased with her.
(Sahih Muslim Vol.2 Hadith No.3367)

Narrated Talq ibn Ali

Allah’s Messenger (Pbuh) said, “When a man calls his wife to satisfy his desire she must go to him even if she is occupied at the oven.”
(Al-Tirmidhi Hadith No.1160 & Ibn Ma’jah Hadith No.4165)

From all the above-mentioned Ahadith, it is Wajib upon the wife to fulfill the desire of her husband whenever he wishes.

If the relationship between the husband and the wife is truly based on Islamic principles, in which both of them treat each other with love, affection, kindness, fulfilling all Islamic desires and settling all matters with mutual agreement and understanding, the question of the wife refusing the sexual desire of the husband does not arise. Nor does the question arise of the husband being insistent or getting perturbed at her not wanting to have sex.

Allah (swt) says in the Qur’an in Surah Rum, chapter 30, verse no. 21:

“And among His signs is this that He created for you mates from among yourselves that you may dwell in tranquility with them and He has put love and mercy between your (hearts); verily in that are Signs for those who reflect.”

If on certain rare occasions, the husband shows a desire for sexual intercourse with his wife, and for some genuine reason the wife shows a hesitation (not refusal), then if possible, the husband can be understanding and voluntarily and happily give indication for postponement!

Allah (swt) says in the Qur’an, in Surah Baqara, chapter 2, verse no 187:

“They (your wives) are your garments. And you are their garments.”

Here, because of the strong bond between the husband and the wife, if the husband is not displeased or angry, the angels will not curse the wife and neither will she displease the Almighty. And Allah knows the best.

What wonderful advice… though, considering it only says ‘beat’ in the sura i quote, then you magically came up with “beat her with your Miswak”. Even with my limited knowledge of Islam, im able to quote sections of the quran better than you.

I think maybe you should really put some time and effort into studying the ‘correct’ passages of the quran.
God bless

Let’s see the Imams tell the public that they’re followers aren’t meant to beat their wives, except with this Miswak - I wonder if that’s for Miss Whack?

Ouch! Sorry!

I’m not kidding…

Volume 8, Book 73, Number 68:

Narrated 'Abdullah bin Zam’a:

The Prophet forbade laughing at a person who passes wind, and said, “How does anyone of you beat his wife as he beats the stallion camel and then he may embrace (sleep with) her?” And Hisham said, “As he beats his slave”

Book 1, Number 0142:

Narrated Laqit ibn Sabirah:

I was the leader of the delegation of Banu al-Muntafiq or (the narrator doubted) I was among the delegation of Banu al-Muntafiq that came to the Messenger of Allah (peace_be_upon_him). When we reached the Prophet, we did not find him in his house. We found there Aisha, the Mother of the Believers. She ordered that a dish called Khazirah should be prepared for us. It was then prepared. A tray containing dates was then presented to us. (The narrator Qutaybah did not mention the word qina’, tray).

Then the Messenger of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) came. He asked: Has anything been served to you or ordered for you? We replied: Yes, Messenger of Allah. While we were sitting in the company of the Messenger of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) we suddenly saw that a shepherd was driving a herd of sheep to their fold. He had with him a newly-born lamb that was crying.

He (the Prophet) asked him: What did it bear, O so and so? He replied: A ewe. He then said: Slaughter for us in its place a sheep. Do not think that we are slaughtering it for you. We have one hundred sheep and we do not want their number to increase. Whenever a ewe is born, we slaughter a sheep in its place.

(The narrator says that the Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) used the word la tahsabanna, do not think).

I (the narrator Laqit) then said: Messenger of Allah, I have a wife who has something (wrong) in her tongue, i.e. she is insolent. He said: Then divorce her. I said: Messenger of Allah, she had company with me and I have children from her. He said: Then ask her (to obey you). If there is something good in her, she will do so (obey); and do not beat your wife as you beat your slave-girl.

I said: Messenger of Allah, tell me about ablution. He said: Perform ablution in full and make the fingers go through the beard and snuff with water well except when you are fasting.

And, from Malik’s Muwatta

Book 30, Number 30.2.13:

Yahya related to me from Malik that Abdullah ibn Dinar said, "A man came to Abdullah ibn Umar when I waswith him at the place where judgments were given and asked him about the suckling of an older person. Abdullah ibn Umar replied, ‘A man came to Umar ibn al-Khattab and said, ‘I have a slave-girl and I used to have intercourse with her. My wife went to her and suckled her. When I went to the girl, my wife told me to watch out, because she had suckled her!’ Umar told him to beat his wife and to go to his slave-girl because kinship by suckling was only by the suckling of the young.’ "
