Save a child from Paganism

I am the most miserable of men - I tried very hard to raise my daughter as a faithful Catholic and failed.

We sent her to the Catholic school at our parish; we taught her about our customary practices; I even coached her in how to defend Catholic beliefs when she went to public school. I had hoped to explain our faith to her so clearly that departing from it would be unthinkable for her.

She has not completely left the Church, but she says that I explained everything so thoroughly that there is no room for simple faith; thus she is looking for something in which to “believe” in the Neo-Pagan community. she has gone away to college, and now I am not in a position to counsel with her daily.

I’m begging - abjectly and piteously - please pray for my Teresa. Pray that God will make His presence and will known to her, so that she will BELIEVE in Him and His church. I am completely heartbroken and miserable; please pray for me as well.

I will also pray for you and Teresa. I will ask St. Teresa of Avila to pray for her not to stray to a pagan religion. I am sure this is heartbreaking for you too, as you say. I remember when two of my 4 sisters left the Catholic Church, my entire family was shocked, but they left for another Christian religion and not paganism. Unfortunately, they don’t feel that they need to go to church for they are saved, according to them. I prayed so much for them when they first left and lost nights of sleep over it. It really bothered me. So I can imagine how many nights you don’t sleep worrying too. Please try not to and I know that is easier said than done, but pray and trust the the Lord will guide you Teresa. You lead her down the right path and even if she takes another route for now, she is bound to return home and be a better Catholic than before. I know my two sisters will return and they will bring their husbands and children with them as well. I trust in the Lord and know this will happen. If someone searches for the truth it is only a matter of time before the Holy Spirit will lead them to the Catholic Church.

I will pray for you in our family Rosary and remember you when I pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet. I will remember Teresa and won’t forget to pray for her the most. I know you are going through a difficult time and remember the Lord Jesus is with you through it all. Just trust and try not to worry. I had to learn that the hard way for it is now 15 years since my sisters left and they have not returned yet. I don’t forget them in my prayers though on a daily basis.

Hang in there and God Bless you for being such a good and caring father that cares about his daughter’s soul so much.

Scripture says that if we raise a child right, they will return to that teaching. You taught her right, and she has strayed, but in her heart she has the truth, and she will return to it. God is not the type to leave a stray sheep lost.

Dear God, please set Your path before Teresa, and fan into flame the spark that You have ignited in her. Let her not stray far, but return quickly to Your holy Church. In Jesus name we pray.
 
Luke 11 : 1-4 " One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.” He said to them, "When you pray, say: " ‘Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation.’ "

This is the Word of God, and you have taught your daughter the truth. Do not be worried for truth will never fade.

Many of us parents know something of the grief and confusion you feel. May God’s promises comfort and help you through. We will keep your daughter and you in our prayers.

Dear brother,

I will also be praying for you and your daughter.

I suggest that you see if you can find a “Life in the Spirit” course anywhere close to where you live. It usually runs for about 8 weeks.

It is amazing what results come from this course. I have done it twice myself.

If you can find one, ask your daughter to do it for you as a favour… and do it with her.

If you cant find one ask your local parish Priest if he can help track down and organisation that does it.

Don’t give up on her or yourself.

RCWHITEH, I’m a teapot agnostic, and I bet you’re a good father. In fact, I’d bet a large sum of money that you’d give your life for your daughter – the one you care enough about to seek help from other good people (via this post). You have a great deal of life experience (and she doesn’t), which makes it perfectly acceptable that you want to help her navigate the windy (and sometimes dangerous) road of life. But I’d like you to consider something.

If your daughter were hurting others – such as mistreating children or robbing banks – I could understand your concern. But I bet she’s not doing these things, is she?

She’s probably a curious adolescent exploring ideas about the cosmos, the soundest available ethical foundations, and where she fits among the myriad social groups available to her. If she has embraced Paganism (as you suggest), then she’ll undoubtedly renounce it quickly. A couple hours of critical reading (even just online) will show her that Paganism is an empty doctrine, as are Islam, Jainism, Christianity, Satanism, Hinduism, and any other religious doctrine on offer.

What worries me is that you seem to be concerned about her FAITH – her belief. If she believed in genocide, discrimination, murder, theft, etc., you’d have reason to be worried, but her exploration of what the world has to offer should be applauded.

I bet if you went up to her right now and said, “Daughter, I want you to start believing in Nazism; we should kill all Jews,” she would respond with disagreement and disgust. Of course you would never say these things to her, but for argument’s sake, imagine you did. I don’t know your daughter, but I think you can rest assured she wouldn’t accept Nazi morality. Likewise, if a group of Pagans suggest she should sacrifice a child to bring about such-and-such rise of such-and-such spirit, she would deny them too. She’d recognize that sacrificing a child (for any reason) is a ridiculous proposition, even at her malleable age. Again, I don’t know her, but I imagine she’s not an idiot.

If this were a Muslim or Southern Baptist or Mormon forum, I wouldn’t even waste my time writing this – the moderators would simply delete my comment. But Catholics (as well as Jews and Anglicans) have a reputation for being reasonable. I ask only that you consider what your daughter is claiming. If she claims murder/rape/robbery are condonable, then you should obviously worry, but if she claims to be curious about the simple facts of life (even if those facts don’t involve Jesus Christ or Allah), then that curiosity should be nurtured.
