From Luke 10

And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, ***what shall I do to inherit eternal life? ***He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou? And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself. And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live. But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour? And Jesus answering said, A certain [man] went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded [him], and departed, leaving [him] half dead. And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked [on him], and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion [on him], And went to [him], and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave [them] to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee. Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves? And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.

Also, God so loved the world that He sent His Son.
Love is omnipotent, eternal and infinite in power.

We are saved by His love!

We are saved by His love!
Well of course we are. What’s your point?

LOVE, FAITH and HOPE, “…and the GREATEST of these is LOVE”

You speak the truth, Jim.

Through ‘this’ (LOVE) are all within and without The Church, saved.

Problems arise when this LOVE is splintered into multiple aspects and everyone claims to have the defining version of it; hence the necessity for clarification so that none may claim security or assurance of exercising true love, whilst denying Christ, or some aspect of His Person and teaching.

Que, The Church.

What is my point?

First, speaking with love and kindness, it is Jesus’ point.

Second, it is a major ecumenical point–to all religions and peoples of the world.

Love is the answer to unity of all 2000 Christian denominations, or whatever the actual number is.

There are many, many, many mysteries involved-- from limbo, to purgatory, to hell, to heaven; to God’s infinite, eternal and omnipotent love and absolue beauty.

Without explaining, the how of creation is God’s love. I think that is the literal meaning of Genesis’ creation accounts.

Without explaining, we were made in the image and likeness of God which is love.

Without explaining, the false images are hate and evil.

Without explaining, God’s infinite love came into the world to save the WORLD.

Without explaining, we are re-created in love–Jesus Christ.

Without explaining, our loving actions are His creative actions once again. As St.Paul says, Christ lives in me.

I got the idea from Spicq’s book Agape. He flourished in the 40s-60s.

Another point–faith only is incomplete, assuming that I have understood the Good Samaritan correctly, and Paul clearly says I am no-thing without love.

Protestants claim we’re saved by faith alone. As Catholics we can say we’re saved by Love alone-by Gods love calling us to love as He does. Theologians say that grace and love are either the same or at least intimately connected. We’re saved by love unto love. This is the perfection of man, and so the greatest single commandment could simply be, “Thou shalt Love”-impossible for man without the aid of grace- Gods love in action. To sin is to act outside this standard of love and reveals that our hearts are hard- unloving.

God is love; we’re saved by Love. This, I believe, sums up the gospel in simplest terms.

**Love, and do what you like. **
St Augustine

**Love takes up where knowledge leaves off. **
St Thomas Aquinas

At the evening of life, we shall be judged on our love.
St. John of the Cross

You stated that as Catholics we say that we are saved by love alone.

I have recently learned about the Samaritan inheriting eternal life because of love.

Where does the Church teach that we are saved by love alone?

Thanks!!!

Well, you won’t find the statement, “Justification by Love alone” anywhere but it is implied all throughout Catholic teachings and was a somewhat revelatory concept for me awhile back-not that it’s new but I do think it could be-and is being -emphasized better and better by the Church.

For in Christ Jesus, neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love. Gal 5:6

1889 Without the help of grace, men would not know how "to discern the often narrow path between the cowardice which gives in to evil, and the violence which under the illusion of fighting evil only makes it worse."13 This is the path of charity, that is, of the love of God and of neighbor. Charity is the greatest social commandment. It respects others and their rights. It requires the practice of justice, and it alone makes us capable of it. Charity inspires a life of self-giving: "Whoever seeks to gain his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will preserve it."14

2052 “Teacher, what good deed must I do, to have eternal life?” To the young man who asked this question, Jesus answers first by invoking the necessity to recognize God as the “One there is who is good,” as the supreme Good and the source of all good. Then Jesus tells him: **“If you would enter life, keep the commandments.” **And he cites for his questioner the precepts that concern love of neighbor: “You shall not kill, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.” Finally Jesus sums up these commandments positively: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself."1

2055 When someone asks him, "Which commandment in the Law is the greatest?"8 Jesus replies: "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the prophets."9 The Decalogue must be interpreted in light of this twofold yet single commandment of love, the fullness of the Law:
The commandments: “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not kill, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this sentence: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore
love is the fulfilling of the law.
