Help…what must I do to be saved? How can I know that I am saved and won’t be in hell?

Jesus tells us:
The Holy Bible RSV
Matthew
Chapter 19

16 And behold, one came up to him, saying, **“Teacher, what good deed must I do, to have eternal life?” *17 And he said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? One there is who is good. If you would enter life, keep the commandments.” 18 He said to him, “Which?” And Jesus said, "You shall not kill, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, 19 Honor your father and mother, and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself." 20 The young man said to him, “All these I have observed; what do I still lack?” 21 Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” 22 When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful; for he had great possessions.
23 And Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly, I say to you, it will be hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” 25 When the disciples heard this they were greatly astonished, saying, “Who then can be saved?” 26* But Jesus looked at them and said to them, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” 27* Then Peter said in reply, “Lo, we have left everything and followed you. What then shall we have?” 28* Jesus said to them, "Truly, I say to you, in the new world, when the Son of man shall sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29 And every one who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold, * and inherit eternal life. 30*But many that are first will be last, and the last first.
If you want to be saved, accept Jesus as your Saviour and your Lord. For him to be your Saviour, you must be born again through water and the Spirit (baptism). [John 3:5, John 3:16]

If he is your Lord, you must obey him by following his commandments as taught by the Scriptures and by his Church (doing good, avoiding sin, and repenting and confessing if you fall short). [John 3:36]

If you wish to be perfect – to go above and beyond what you need to be saved out of love for our Lord, you must detach yourself from the things of this world according to your state of life (married, single, consecrated, etc.).

Believe in Jesus, be baptised, do good/avoid sin, do penance, strive for holiness:

Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint but rather be healed. Strive for peace with all men, **and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord. ** Hebrews 12:12-14

In all this, you have moral (not absolute) assurance of salvation. Moral assurance means that we are able to place our hope and trust in God that what he has promised, he can and will do – if we do not, through our free will, place obstacles in the way.

Saved or self-deceived…

I vote for self-deception. Yours.

I implore you to have greater humility. Understand the teachings of the Church before you come to these forums with deceptive Socratic questions.

Read your Bible, but don’t stop til you finish reading at least til the end, then go back and read James again, and memorize James 2.

Me thinks it may be a “banned” one revisiting under a new monicker:eek:

Let’s look at the facts. In spite of all their hype to the contrary, their fundamental doctrine of Sola Scriptura is a deceiving error that only came into being as a new wind of doctrines of men some 500 years ago. To this day they have not proved it to be scriptural and then have suffered the deluge of errors that flow down from it.

How can one trust a group that bases it’s whole theology on an unscriptural doctrinal error like that? To my mind that is what would smack of self-deception. 🤷

Trust in God and follow Jesus with all your heart and go wherever He leads you. Be a Truth seeker first, not just a good Baptist, Methodist, Penecostal, or even Catholic. Be humble enough to except the Truth as it is revealed to you, even if it means to adjust and change some of your beliefs in the process.

Then, I suggest exploring Catholicism with an open mind and learning it from the horse’s mouth and not from those who are not Catholic, you will discover that there is a big difference.

From a Catholic prespective we have a formula that is actually not that hard to understand. Obviously Faith is the key. But to become saved it requires Repentence, Faith, and Baptism; and then we live a life of Repentence, Faith, and Confession. Baptism washes away the sins that we have committed and inherited from Adam, and then Confession takes care of the sins that we commit after Baptism.

As the bible tells you, obey Christ and persevere until the end.

If you would like to learn more about the teachings of Jesus Christ, please contact the folks at chnetwork.org/. I promise, if you unite yourself to Jesus Christ through His Church, you will experience the great gift the He has promised to those who follow Him. As Jesus said, “He who eats My body and drinks My blood lives in Me and I in him and I will raise him up on the last day.” And He is faithful and sure to keep His promises. Repent, turn to the Gospel and be saved and you will have everlasting life.

Grace and peace be with you.

Your servant in Christ.

You might consider knocking off the disingenuous game playing, for one. You have already testified in another post that you consider yourself saved.

That makes this question just one of trolling. If you have real questions about the Catholic faith, then please post them, and you will receive as much information as we are able to give you.
It is not our job as Catholics to accuse people, that is the
devil’s job. The work of God is to be an encourager, like St.
Barnabas. Please OP, forgive us when we accuse you. Catholics here have suffered at the hands of protestants.
Imagine how you would feel if you went to a “safe haven” to
discuss your faith with like-minded people and found yourself
instead attacked for your faith? There are actually people who
would use your question to try and disprove the entire Catholic
faith.

There are several good Bible verses to answer your question,
although the one I like, I’d have to find it. It is where St. Paul
says he never judges people, and he doesn’t even judge himself.
He just keeps running in the right direction. That is what we
all have to do. Once he says he is obligated to continue preaching the gospel, or he might lose the reward that he made
possible for others to gain.

If you are looking for answers to eternal questions, the Catholic
Church is the right place to come. All the answers to the mysteries of the faith are held in the Catholic Church.:blessyou:

Know Jesus and mirror His love. Anything less is deception and all deception is sin…teachccd 🙂

Cheeto1, I appreciate your valiant charity. You are providing a wonderful example of living faith in making no assumptions about the OP and I understand your intentions.

Guanaphore is simply using common sense here. The OP has already posted that he/she is saved and filled with the Holy Spirit, so plain reason tells us that the post is disingenuous and manipulative.

IMHO, there is an excellent case to be made for exposing psychological manipulation (“trolling”, “bullying”) and not playing into it. If those who are accustomed to being attacked (Catholics) and manipulated by emotional, accusatory arguments from others (Fundamentalists) can hold firm and prevent being put into a defensive position, then we are better able to allow others to see the truth of our faith.

P.S… Some of the Jewish leaders attempted to trap Jesus with manipulative questions, as you recall, and He was able to circumvent being trapped by deceptive questions while remaining loving…

TROLL ALERT!! Take your anti-Catholic sentiments to another forum since your watered down theology will not work here. Being saved is following Christ and the Church that He founded upon Peter. ANYTHING less is deception . Now let’s see if our friend, NonCatholic ever returns…teachccd

So then, perhaps we Catholics should move on and not explain salvation to ourselves in this thread since NonCatholic is long gone. We can exhibit all the love in the world but NonCatholic has spoken and I highly doubt that he is discerning our posts. I could be wrong but unlikely…teachccd

If I was NonCatholic, I wouldn’t. I would be just as disillusioned
as Ghandi.

I apologize if I have been unloving. I did my research, though. I looked up the member and read all the posts so far, some of which contained such blatant anti-catholic material that they had to be edited by the mods.

It is not loving to confirm others in error.

Wouldn’t what? Want to become Catholic? Clearly this is the case from the anti-Catholic perspective of this member.I am not sure why he is here, perhaps to try to bring Catholics to Christ. All that is clear is that he already considers himself saved, and the Catholic Church “wrong”. 🤷

I bet lots of people have long considered themselves saved and are now questioning it. Where then, can they go, with a question like that if not to the Catholic Church? Jesus has the words of eternal life.

If he is already posting links to anti-catholic material, I think it’s a safe bet his mind is not open enough to have any sense of disillusionment from being confronted.

My guess is his only disilllusionment would come from seeing Christian charity in you, and Scriptural support from others, ironically!

Indeed, and since this member obviously has issues against the Catholic church, it would be in his best interest to get down to business with them. Disingenuously presenting himself as if he is not saved, or does not already consider himself saved is not going to help. If you read his other posts ,it is clear that he is not questioning his salvation at all.

No doubt there are reasons he is not Catholic. Those are why CAF is here! Instead of playing games, let’s talk about the issues!
