Saving stranded earthworms (this is a problem for me, really...)

I have never done this before this year. But that day I was walking and a long fat
worm was traveling slowly accross the way. He was the picture of health. I couldn’t
bear to let a bike hit him so I picked him up and moved him off the bike path.
I felt so satisfied that I was surprised. Then there was another worm and I moved
him too. I felt satisfied again, but worms are yuccy. When I saw the third one, I
didn’t want to move him. A bike probably wouldn’t come…but o.k., I moved him too.
Now I wondered, what is the number of worms that I am willing to move? I’ve been
on 2 other worm-moving walks since then, but haven’t seen more than 4.

So what is your limit on moving worms? How many till you say, “I’m done”?

I save the little worms too. I can’t stand to see them struggling on side walks. That goes for turtles in roads too (although the snapping turtles are problematic!) It’s good to see there are so many other soft hearted (or maybe soft headed 😉 ) people out there.

I save the worms also, but I put them in a cup so I can use them as bait.😃

I do too! I didn’t know there are so many who would! I used to put them in the nearest well-kept garden so they had the best chance…as a consequence to such attentions to creatures on the way to school holding my granddaughter’s hand, she’s studying ecology and biology.

You’re not getting any of mine! 😃
And cheeto…as many as are there… I don’t find them ‘yucky’.

My grandson when quite young lived in an area where there were lots of snails at a cetain time of year. He’d carefully move dozens off the path…but every now and then, the ‘boy’ in him would take over and he’d aim his bike wheels at as many as possible.

If I remember correctly, my dad once saved one of those (not a very big one since they tend not to get that big this far north): he had to use a garden shovel with a long handle to pick it up.

**My dirty little secret is that I do this too!! I don’t go out of my way to find them, but I will toss the ones I see back on the lawn. Perhaps I’m atoing for all of those bait worms when I fish…🤷😊

Anyway, it’s a small act of kindness, harmless really. If it becomes troublesome, offset the behavior by seeking out some homeless member of our species and lend a hand.

God Bless.**

What a delightful thread

I must confess that I have not often rescued worms, although I do my best to avoid treading on them, and also snails, especially after rain.

I concur with the posters who have said there is no harm in doing this, unless, perhaps, it becomes an obsession and you find yourself going out of your way to find worms to save, to the neglect of other necessary tasks. However, small acts of kindness and compassion, even to our humblest fellow Earthlings, are good for the soul.
