I don’t believe the priest, or many of the posters on this thread make light of the moment of communion.

You are making a mountain out of a mole hill.

doormouse 73 has a point: the 9th commandment is, “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.”
First it’s a “little thing” according to one member, now it’s a “mole hill” to laugh during the moment of Holy Communion. Ok.

But those who were raised to believe the moment of Holy Communion is a special moment are not allowed to comment without being subject to ridicule ?

btw, by insinuating I broke the 9th, you are flirting with calumny

I’m judging no one, just pointing out that laughing during Holy Communion is a bad call.

I don’t think that’s in the rubrics. It’s the timing, not the brief chuckle. I was always led to believe the moment of Holy Communion was a special moment we should take seriously.
Which the other 51 Sundays of the year this priest very well may do what you said.

A moment of innocent laughter, something which can be instinctual, between a priest and an alter server is the cause of people being appalled. What’s next; a priest sneezing and people calling the Bishop?

oh no! NO LAUGHTER ALLOWED! calm down, folks! he was probably reassuring the altar server…and either way, we don’t know! lighten up.

OP asked if it’s ok. It’s not.

We can make up all the hypothetical situations known to mankind. It won’t change the correct answer.

So I have read through this thread, and quite honestly, I am just stunned!

OP, what you saw was probably one-time, “human moment” between a priest & an altar server. Sometimes “stuff happens”, and you have no reason to believe that this is something that happens all the time. To let something like this “shock or dismay” you is something I strong suggest you talk about with your home priest and the people running the RCIA program.

And based on some of the responses, I am starting to wonder if CAF is actually just a bunch of robots, sitting a computer terminals.
WE ARE HUMAN, PEOPLE, AND TONIGHT, WE CELEBRATE GOD BECOMING HUMAN!!! A TINY, LITTLE, VULNERABLE, MESSY HUMAN BEING!!!
We cough, sneeze, laugh, fart (yes, I said the “f-word”! :p), giggle and have to pee at the most inappropriate times- GET USED TO IT!!

If it was OK for God… 🤷
My family went to visit a nearby parish for Mass today because we had no RCIA or psr scheduled given the holiday. We sometimes do that, visit other churches when we don’t have classes scheduled at ours.

I’m hoping for some feedback regarding something that happened this morning because we don’t exactly know what to make of it.

As Father was taking a consecrated host to each altar server and eucharistic minister standing at the altar he stopped at one teenaged altar server and before handing him the very body of Jesus Christ, said something to the server which made them both laugh. Father then twisted around to indicate something regarding his hip, which the server looked down at, and laughed again, before Father presented him a Host and placed it in his hand.

For all the world it looked like Father and altar server shared in a private joke which caused them both to laugh while Father was passing out the Sacred Hosts to the altar servers and eucharistic ministers lined around the altar.

I have never seen this before and was shocked and dismayed at what i perceived to be a lack of reverence.

What should i think about what i saw? Do these things happen? Should i have been bothered?

thanks

Did the priest sin ? Probably not. Did Liturgical abuse occur ? Probably not.

Is it ok to tell a concerned catechumen it’s no big deal ? No it isn’t.

What’s stunning is seeing our human mannerisms being presented as an excuse for what the OP described, along with reverence for the Blessed Sacrament taking second place on the ladder of importance. If it’s even mentioned in some cases.

Anyhow, we should be joyful this day instead of bickering.

Merry Christmas all 🙂

If a priest sneezes, is it the same boat? A cough? Are priests allowed to smile?

OP wants to know if laughter during Holy Communion is common and ok. The answer is no.

I’m sure the priest he saw would agree and then explain what the deal was. I’m not judging the priest, no matter how much you bait me to do so.

Why am I getting this message ?
Sorry Melchior_ is a moderator/admin and you are not allowed to ignore him or her.

I’m sure the OP would like some context rather than a blanket statement, which is what some are doing.

I’m not baiting anyone, nor is anyone performing acts of calumny. Some are saying the priest was wrong, others are saying we should look at things on context. Considering that we look at the Bible contextually, maybe we should look at people’s minor actions in a similar fashion.

Not sure, I’m not a mod or an admin. Probably a site gltich if you’re trying to ignore me.

I would not be returning to that church again. Nothing like that has ever happened at my church and we have had quite a few priests - some seem to be a little ADD but never laughing with an altar server.
wow, it’s not really that big of a deal O_O

I of all people believe in having solemn respect and soley focusing on worship during Holy Mass, but c’mon it ain’t that big of a deal, gee

i so agree with 1ke on this

I’m with you. And, if he was gesturing towards his hip, he might have been sharing a joke about his microphone malfunctioning. One time, at Ash Wednesday, I happened to be first in one line. The new (first Ash Wednesday!) priest suddenly realized that he hadn’t turned his microphone off. I waited with patient good humour while he fumbled to correct it. Sometimes, during a time of solemnity and reverence, our human nature still manages to sneak in. 🙂

Just a side note, that’s the 8th commandment.
im sorry about that,i couldnt think which one it was.

i stand corrected.

but i still stand by the commandment and why i put it in there…

any way live and let live…ive not seen the O P around since the spanner got thrown in the works, has any body else???

Have you ever tried to suppress spontaneous humor in a solemn moment? Do you know how difficult it is? You know not what transpired, so it’s best not to pontificate.
