SAW - the movie, my thoughts, Purgatory, spoilers

A good horror movie on purgatory is Silent Hill. That had some interesting symbolism.

Horror movies would make an interesting witnessing vehicle and I don’t know why more Christian directors don’t use them for this.

You rarely have blurring of evil(Saw being an exception) in horror movies. The bad guy is bad and totally evil.

The good person, usually not the strongest, initial member of the party defeats the bad guy.

There is a definite interplay of good/ evil, innocence/darkness in many horror movies.

I pray Purgatory is not like Silent Hill… I PRAY! lol

(P.S. the video game is even scarier, SH2 and 3 have alot of christian elements in it, even some apocryphical stuff like Metatron)

I like scary movies, but not gory ones. However, we had a wonderful seminary student at our church last summer, and he loves all those movies…all of the SAW movies, Hostel movies, etc. He is a very spiritual person and will be an excellent priest someday.

Question–I saw a poster of Saw IV at Blockbuster…the pic shows a bear like creature/person with a bear head sitting in a booby trap type contraption/chair? What was that all about??

If you want to see a good horror movie, may I suggest The Messengers. I went to the theater with a friend and nearly jumped in her lap twice. Of course that made us both laugh in the middle of the movie. I like scares that don’t disturb me.

Saw 2 was actually interesting, but Jigsaw annoys the heck out of me. He just seems so pompous. I know that you aren’t supposed to like the killer but I really, really get annoyed with Jigsaw.

I didn’t like Saw 3 because it seemed to be crossing the border between a good scare and cruelty. That is why I won’t see Hostel.

I saw Hostel, totally regret it though. I didn’t know what i was getting myself into when i rented this movie but it was pretty twisted. At least with Saw you can take out the gore and still have a good movie. Hostle was basically torture porn.

LOL–Probably not, but I agree with the poster about looking at it like a puzzle. I do think that the minds behind these films must be pretty twisted though to come up with such screenplays. But, then again…I’m watching it…I don’t think I’m twisted.

You people don’t like murky morality, a deraged villian, a twisted PLOT? What all other horror movies lack, this one has a PLOT, a purpose, look how many have said it provoked discussion amongst them! It got the talking, it got the thinking!

Did Jason or Freddy make you think, were they comparable to John? Were ever there so twisted an anti-hero, as he’s been called, or bad-guy?

I believe the Hostel movies to be more torture-porn than Saw, which is simply torture

All other movies introduce the characters, and then detail their gruesome deaths, and the monster of the film has little reason to kill other than ridding us of some annoying teenagers.

Palpatine was the closest I could come to, and he was all stupid ambition and power-hunger. Not much there, but more than any of Lucas’ other characters.

Do we have to stay with the movies? I like the female villian in a book that you have probably never heard of. It is called Armadale by Wilkie Collins. SHe is one of the most devious women in literature. I wish more people were aware of this book. What about the woman in East of Eden, Cathy. I love the way Steinbeck explains her actions. He said that some people are born with deformities that one can see while other people are born with deformities that one can’t see.

If I have to name movie characters then Anthony Hopkins gets my vote as the best villian in Silence of the Lamb.

Saw is a terrible movie and Jigsaw is a terrible villain simply because it’s so implausible.

And I know what you’re thinking, Freddy and Jason are not plausible at all. But they’re meant to be monsters. Once you make the one leap of faith that there are monsters that do exist, it’s fine.

Jigsaw is a human being that seems to know EVERYTHING ABOUT EVERYTHING. His plans are so ludicrous. If one character would simply run left instead of right then he’d be ruined.

This was my thought. Jigsaw seems to have more foreknowledge then God in some of the scenarios.

Plus, he would have to been very wealthy to buy all the equipement for the overly complex traps and to set up the crime scenes. Um…excuse me, the police while looking for a serial killer wouldn’t notice that someone is buying the type of material that Jigsaw uses?

Besides, he is just so darned pompous and judgemental. I can get that from some that I know without being subjected to the implausable story plot.

I will say though that the actor who plays Jigsaw is a very good actor.

Is it bad that I only watch the original 9-mins version of the movie on youtube? Well, it’s originated as a short film, then extended to a full-length movie. I only read the movies (SAW I, II & III) on wikipedia and I can tell that I will never ever want to watch the movies.
