Say a prayer for me tomorrow, if you could

I have a doctor’s appointment at 9:30 tomorrow, to probably go get some blood work done.

Long story short, after my last hypoglycemic / hyperglycemic episode this morning, I called and set up the appointment. My doctor is on vacation this week (naturally), but I’m going to see the other doc in the office.

I’m pretty sure I know how this is going to work out, and they’re going to tell me I’m diabetic, or at least pre-diabetic, because I have all the classic symptoms: extreme hunger, extreme thrist, waking up at night with the sweats, dry mouth, peeing about two hundred times a day, blurry vision and trouble focusing my eyes, dry, flaky skin and itchiness, spells of extreme fatigue where I literally fall asleep in my chair unless I’m up and physically moving around, and last but certainly not least, the extremely nasty and disturbing shakey spells that I mentioned above.

It runs in the family. My mother had it, both my sisters have it; plenty of aunts and uncles have had it. So, if that’s the way the diagnosis turns out, I won’t really be too surprised, but I’m not looking forward to it. (Christmas is coming, and if what I suspect turns out to be true, that’ll be the end of pigging out on Christmas candy for me for the rest of my life…{sigh})

But on the other hand, if it keeps me from feeling like something the cat refused to drag in (like I have for the last two weeks), I guess it’ll be worth it. And in the longer term, I really don’t feel like dying in the next year or so, if you know what I mean.

You will be in my prayers for your strength and healing.

Eternal God, in whom mercy is endless and the treasury of compassion inexhaustible, look kindly upon us, and increase Your mercy in us, so that in difficult moments we might not despair, nor become despondent, but with great confidence, submit ourselves to Your Holy Will, which is Love and Mercy itself. Amen

God bless you †

Hail Mary,
Full of Grace,
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit
of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary,
Mother of God,
pray for us sinners now,
and at the hour of our death.
Amen

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me.

Amen.

Well, I’ll know more by Thursday. They sent me to a lab and took blood for what they called an “A1C” test, which is supposed to see what the sugar in your hemoglobin has done for the last ninety days.

They also took about three of those test where they p(name removed by moderator)rick your finger and run a drop of blood into one of those monitors, which is just going to play absolute hob with my banjo picking. Mine all seemed to be in the normal range (first two were fasting—reading of 96 at 7 AM and 114 at 10:00, then a reading of 121 at 1:30, two hours after I ate lunch). We shall see.

He said it’s not impossible to get violent cases of the shakes like I’ve been experiencing and still have blood readings in the normal range. Something to do with the sugar spiking and then tanking. I don’t know what he was talking about, but then, my degree is in history, not medicine.

Well, the A1C came back normal; the doc told me likely what was happening was that I’m pre-diabetic, and the coffee I was drinking in the morning (caffiene with sugar and commercial creamer which is nothing more than powdered corn syrup) was overloading my system, which caused my pancreas to kick into overdrive, and I was spiking, and then crashing—thus the shakes.

So, I was told to stay on a fairly diabetic-type diet, no more coffee or Coca-Cola, and if and I had another attack of the trembles, to immediately take a blood sugar reading. I tried it this morning, as an experiment—drank two cups black, just to see what would happen. Within an hour, I had violent trembles. My fasting blood sugar was 92 when I got up; in the midst of the shakes, it was 98, so it isn’t my sugar, it’s the coffee.

Bummer. I’ve been drinking the stuff since I was about 11 years old, and there’s nothing like a good hot cup of joe; but there we are.

Ah, aging. What a joy.

Praying for you and that you can control through your diet… Yes, I have to have my coffee too, so I feel bad for you on that one… At least you’ve found the problem.Take Care…

Hi, Wolseley,
Glad it’s not worse news. You know to expect major headaches for a few days from caffeine withdrawal, right? I’ll pray for you to get through that without too much ado. I’m a caffeine junkie myself so my sympathy goes out to you, too.
