Say hello to...Homer Simpson's Jesus Question!

I have not been to the Philosophy forum in a while, so I thought I might “celebrate” my posting back on it by postulating this “apparently” paradoxical question…courtesy of that great mind and person, Homer Simpson. 😃

Do not remember which season he asked this on, but it is to its credit that professors ask this in their theology classes, Christian or otherwise. I just read a book of a dialogue between an atheist and a believer where the believer (a theology professor) admitted he asks this question to his students…:o

The question is…(and from my POV, it is ultimately a question of the omnipotence and humanity/non-humanity of Jesus, though some may disagree here).

Some of you may have already heard it.

“Can Jesus microwave a burrito so hot where even he cannot eat it?”

The question is all over youtube and google, so you may search there. 😛

Personally, I think: if yes, then he is not really a God----if no, then he is really a God. But you folks (who are more trained in logic) may defeat me here. So what do you think? Comments welcome. 🙂
 
The fact of the matter is Jesus is true God and true man. There are some things that we can never know, that’s why they are called mysteries, if we could know everything then we would be God.

I will say this, I feel bad for those who try to trap God, who try to corner Him in ridiculous questions posed by our limited minds, I will pray for all those who think as such…

Paradoxical indeed, but if you ask God for powder water, He would have no problem giving it to you. If we can think it, He can produce it. One of His titles is Almighty, entertainer, not one of them.
 
Funny question. In one sense, the answer is “Yes”, because of course Jesus, here on earth with a human body, could be burned by eating an extremely hot burrito.

In terms of the more general question, which is often asked as “can God create a rock so big even he can’t lift it”, the answer is “No”, because God cannot contradict His own nature. In a way, it’s like asking “can God stop being God”. No, of course He can’t. Does that make Him less omnipotent? No, it does not.
 
I knew someone who went off on tangents, and while we were sitting in a donut shop,he went off on one of his wild theorizing.

He said “Why can’t they solidify water?”

A woman who was sitting nearby overheard him. She said, “He sounds like a very intelligent man.”

My reply was, "Well, I guess you’d get that impression, but let’s face it, you can solidify water. All you have to do is freeze it.

It is all in someone’s perspective as to if a question is silly or not.

Fire eaters can put flaming swords in their mouths. I suppose God could make a burrito so hot even He wouldn’t really want to eat it, but He could do it, I am sure.

Matt Fradd and Jimmy Akin both answered this: Akin phrased it as God cannot do something that is logically inconsistent. As a bachelor, I am not married, so am logically not a married bachelor.
 
Omnipotence is often defined as the ability to do absolutely anything, no matter what that thing might be. That definition is highly insufficient, as that isn’t how it has been understood traditionally by theologians. Let’s rephrase the question to put it into perspective. If God’s power is limitless, can he impose limits on himself? That’s basically the question being asked, and the problems with it are obvious.
 
I’m still trying to figure out if God can make a rock he cannot lift.

I’ll put the microwave burrito next in line.😃

I think Jesus getting a burrito that hot, in the microwave, without it exploding would be the true miracle. 😃

This is the old why can’t God create a square circle argument or the rock as someone else pointed out.

As other have said God can’t contradict his own nature. I think I remember it being referenced as a logical contradiction.
 
Obviously it’s a non-question because there are no microwaves that exist that could tolerate that level of heat.

Additionally, there comes a point where the burrito will lose heat as fast as the microwave radiation generates it.

It’s not a question of God. It a question of the microwave. 😃
 
I have never watched The Simpsons, and knowing that they engage in this kind of mocking of God and theology confirms that I’ve made the right decision.
