I don’t know if this is a correct forum to post this is, I’m mostly just looking to reach out, say hello, and introduce myself. I chose Catholic Life>Family Living, because I’m currently in a very family-centric stage of life right now and this seems to be the forum that I’m most likely to be interested in right now. 🙂

I’m female, early-mid 30s, living in the Los Angeles area with my husband of 8.5 years. We have a 2.5 yr old daughter and I’m due with #2 at the end of this month. I was raised in a Protestant (non-denominational) church and attended Christian schools as well as a Christian university. During/after college, in hopes of strengthening my faith, I began to ask some serious questions. This lead me to serious doubting, and I eventually gave up on Christianity (though I wanted to believe in something still, I just couldn’t figure out what I believed or where I belonged).

Fast forward to over a decade later, and here I am, starting to feel led to Catholicism. My husband works in entertainment, where many do not practice religion/faith of any sort and I’ve found myself seriously longing for some kind of church home and/or even just social interaction with others who lean more conservatively/religiously.

My husband (who has had a similar background and been on a similar questioning path as myself, and is willing to go along with me) and I have attended a few Catholic masses in our area, but it’s really hard to talk to anyone! Our 2.5yr old is not used to mass/church and has difficulty sitting still, so most of the service we’re attending to her. Afterwards, we don’t know how to go up to anyone and talk to them, so we usually just go back to our car and go home. And now that #2 is almost here, this will make it even harder for us to get to know anyone or attend mass.

I had actually thought about starting RCIA classes in the fall, but knowing that I was due around Easter made me feel like this year probably wasn’t meant to be, plus, I was a little unimpressed with the first RCIA class I attended (I felt like I was way beyond it in my own personal knowledge of the Christian/Catholic faith already), and kind of dropped out.

So…I guess I just figured that, for the time being, if I can’t really get plugged into a local Catholic church/parish, then I might as well get to know other Catholics online for the time being. It’s not quite the same as getting to know people in person, but at least I would be getting to know other Catholics somewhere, which is a start! 🙂

So hello everyone!

Hi to you! I’m not Catholic [yet] but enjoy the people I have met here at CAF. This is a good place to land if you are looking for encouragement in your walk with Christ, and good family issue discussions too.

Welcome and make yourself at home.

I’m not on CAF very often, but I am moved by your post. I agree with Stilldreamn that you can interact with some quality people here. Many Catholics (and nonCatholics, our bros and sisses) who come here are on fire for their faith, and walking with Christ - some at a limp and some at a sprint - and are more than happy to pray for you and answer questions, or otherwise dialogue.

I will be praying for you and all those being called home to the Catholic Church, rg.

Don’t be shy about talking to the priest at the parish you’ve visited. Also, you never know, there may be a mom’s group or a person or a ministry you might be interested in (like soup kitchen, etc) that makes it easier to meet people at that parish.

Here’s a hint, find out who the on-fire Catholics are at church (let’s hope there are a few) and tell them you are considering converting. My guess is they’ll make sure you feel welcome. (Catholics don’t recruit new members, so people from other denominations or nondenominations can feel ignored or not wanted because perhaps at their old church visitors were courted. Just know, Christ wants you and the parishioners look forward to you joining in full union with the Church. I’m not completing this train of thought but I hope you know what I’m trying to say.)

Hello! Welcome! I’m excited for you and your faith journey. I used to live in Southern California, and met a lot of wonderful Catholics there. Yes, Mass can be challenging with little ones. But exposing them early to the quiet rhythm of Catholic worship is good. You may struggle to take something away, but the discipline of attendance is good for the kids. They might eventually tell you “thanks for taking us to Mass Mom, I like the quiet time”.

What you won’t get is the Eucharist if you don’t endure the RCIA process. You might very well be more advanced than this basic introduction to the church. But you should make it a priority if you are serious about the faith. As a Mom, I can tell you its tough for me to get through a week without receiving the Eucharist. Meanwhile, read some Catholic books - delve into the saints (Thomas Merton, Thomas Acquinas). I love reading Fr. James Martin’s books. There is so much to take in and maybe you have already done so.

I would caution you about looking for the social at Sunday Mass. Join a parish and a Mom’s group, or bible study or another group outlet for the social part of your Catholic community. Sunday Mass is our worship, and while parishes will do donuts, a Knights pancake breakfast or something after, I find its tough to socialize outside of the small talk and pleasantries after Mass. People seem to be off to their busy weekends!

What a special time to be welcoming your second - enjoy it! May the peace of Christ be with you!

Hello! Im a cradle Catholic in Ventura county. Feel free to contact me with ANY questions! God bless. I would love to help you on your journey any way I can God bless!

Hi
I was a Californian until 7 mo. ago. I was raised in the diocese of Los Angeles so I know how very big the Los Angeles area is. Perhaps if you say what part of that area you live in or the name of a near by parish maybe someone here lives near by. I grew up in Torrance and that is a fer piece from Ventura.

Welcome to CAF! It’s wonderful that you have found the Mass and i wish you the best in finding friends in Burbank and on the forum. You might keep an eye on your archdiocesan website for Catholic events wher you might meet others and also check out different parishes for RCIA options.
Our priest at my FSSP parish does all of the instruction for those seeking to enter the church himself-it’s a great way to really learn the faith.
May God bless you and may His Blessed Mother pray for you always.
Amen.

RJG,

Welcome to the forum and I pray your journey of faith is a most fulfilling one. I also am in the Los Angeles area – Redondo Beach to be accurate. I am also an usher at my Church St. James in Redondo Beach. Here is a link to the website: stjamesparish.org/, there is a very large hall right next to the Church that offers pasties / rolls / donuts and coffee after each of the morning masses (not after the noon mass so none for us that go to that mass 🤷) but it is also a great way to socialize and meet other people of the faith. If there is a Church that you found that you preferred of the ones you attended, if they do not have a get together like this maybe suggest it to one of the Priests. Or if you are not too far from Redondo Beach your family can try St. James and be welcome officially to the faith.

May God bless and keep You, your Husband, and Child.

I’m thinking that you might just look into the invitation to St. James in Redondo Beach. I grew up just about 2 miles from there and spent my high school years on Redondo Beach and Torrance Beach (the two are so close that one might think that Torrance beach is part of Redondo). At any rate it isn’t so far from Burbank, when we lived in CA we drove about that distance to attend a Parish. Maybe the person who told you about the parish would be willing to go to an earlier Mass just to make your acquaintance and have coffee and doughnuts with you to help you become more comfortable around Catholics. I love the south bay area and will always miss it. It may be worth a try.
