A friend of mine who is also Catholic was vacationing with me at a beach resort and said that a mass was being held outside on Wednesday night and invited me to join. Unfortunately, the service was rained out but I had always thought that mass had to be said in a physical church structure. Am I right? Maybe this was nothing more than a prayer service…I don’t know? My friend was under the impression that it was Catholic though.

The Code of Canon Law puts it this way:

“Can. 932 §1. The eucharistic celebration is to be carried out in a sacred place unless in a particular case necessity requires otherwise; in such a case the celebration must be done in a decent place.”

Hope that helps.

It’s pretty common to celebrate Mass outside at Catholic cemeteries on Memorial Day.
