I was told it stood for “Fornication Under Court of King” and was found in King Henry VIII’s account books. I’d never heard the German origin, but that seems to be credible.
The word is still immoral – though not grave – to use, as other posters have said. Polite people who claim the Prince of Peace and Purity as their Lord should act like such. I asked my dad why he never used foul language, and he directed me to the Biblical passage that says “You will be held responsible for every idle word you speak.”
Atheism is a sin, according to the First Commandment. There God says that His wrath is upon the third to fourth generation of those who hate Him. Hubby’s closest ancestors have a history of atheism. And we wonder why our lives are so cross-filled? He hasn’t been to the sacraments in about a decade, and he wonders why life is so hard.
As for GD, the Second Commandment guides that usage – or lack thereof. Whomever uses God’s name in vain shall not go unpunished.
We Catholics also believe in the True Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Why are we desecrating our tongue on which the Lord of Hosts is received?
Whenever I get upset, I do pray not to use God’s name in vain. I usually start praying the Ave and invoke the Holy Spirit to intervene. My surviving son drops off his father’s insurance at the end of the month, and hubby and I have been going at each other over the options. This is highly uncharacteristic of me, btw.
I heard a song on NPR once that went like this:
We sit down to have a chat
F-word this, F-word that
Don’t you use the F-word with
Your mother.
