Saying the name Yahweh/Jehovah

Regarding Exodus 6:3 And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name Jehovah (Adonai in some translations) was I not known to them.

What is the history of this moment? Were the Jews not to call God by a certain term prior to that time, but afterward they could because He revealed it? Is this related to the YHWH abbreviation or some denominations that use the term G-d?

My understanding in part is that when Moses met the Midianites that their One God had no name.

Any words spoken in certain cultures were believed to summon or have power so speaking certain names may be construed as taking the name in vain especially if it were spoken by someone who was not a Levite in the position of priest or prophet.

Egyptians believed in the power of the spoken word and used it to summon gods and goddesses or netjer who were the faces of One God in ancient times.

I believe, and please someone correct me if I am wrong, that God’s name should have only been spoken at certain times in the tabernacle.

I’m not sure if you wish a discussion about the meaning of Exodus 6:3 (see the difficulty arising in this passage because of Genesis 15:7) and how and why God was rebuking Moses or whether you wish a discussion about the various names of God in the Tanach, the reason for their use and the various attributes of God in the different names?

I would like to know the history of forbidden terms for God that later became unforbidden.
