Saying the priest's words

There is something I have noticed that not onl annoys me and distracts me, but I wonder if it is wrong.

There is a gentlman whom I have sat next to at mass a few times. During the mass, he quietly utters the words that the priest utters - including the Eucharistic prayer. It drives me nuts.

Is this wrong and if so, what is anyone’s advice as to how to handle the situation? We serve in music ministry together, so we will be seated near eachother in future masses.

I don’t think anyone is going to tell you that him saying the words softly is wrong. It may just be his way of getting more deeply into the Mass.
 
I sometimes follow along (silently I hope) to keep my mind from wandering off into the ozone … which is of course depleted and I, therefore, am in danger of loosing myself completely
 
Another thing I have noticed when mass is said in an alternate location (not in the sanctuary, but outdoors, for instance) is that most of the congregation speak with the priest at this juncture:

When the priest raises the body and blood of our Lord, he says,

“through Him, with Him, in Him…In the unity of the Holy Spirit…All glory and honor is Yours now and forever.”

These are the words to be said by the priest, no? It really distracts me to hear others saying this along with the priest. I wonder how much people are really doing robotically, rather than understanding what level of participation they are called to.

This was a practice at my old parish during the 70’s. It (the practice) has since then been squashed.

The Magisterium has provided the Novus Ordo to us. We are not to add or subtract from the form provided. The Priest says certain things that the congregation does not…or should not.

As the other poster had stated earlier, this might be an issue of someone who is just very into the goings on in the Mass. Should this continue to bother you, you should ask him/her outside of Mass…and in the most charitible way to stop as this is causing you to loose focus on the blessed sacrament. It can certainly be done in a way that does not insult him/her.
 
It has been a year since I posted this, and unfortunately, the guy is STILL doing this! Yikes. All I can think of to do is to move away from. Unfortunately, he’s seated behind me most of the time.

ARGGGHH. Patience…

I remember this problem being discussed before, and it was said that the people are not suppose to pray the prayers of the priest aloud with him, but I can’t quote chapter and verse of the document that says this. I have seen people do this, though. They seem to be older people who have hearing problems, and probably don’t realize that they are praying aloud! They don’t intend to do something that they shouldn’t be doing, and which annoys others. Could this be the problem here?

Sadly, no. He’s a young thirty-something and should know better and he’s been asked not to do it. (not by me). Argggh. He just can’t help himself for some reason.
 
I think you just need to find a new ‘favorite pew’. No he’s not supposed to, but if he’s been told and continues it is probably totally unconscious on his part. Also, he may be trying to stop and failing. Best for your concentration and out of charity to him is to just sit somewhere else.
 
He may not be aware he is doing it at all. I’ve known many student actors who are oblivious to their own habit of mouthing their fellow actors’ lines as they await their own turn to speak…it’s quite aggravating, I admit, but it might be necessary for him to concentrate.

What is more bothersom, that this man is doing to bother you, or that your bothered by this man. It’s no different than babies crying. With there being many different people at Mass there are distractions. Offer what anoyes you up to Christ. I’ll bet those nails were darn anoying.
 
In most churches in Dublin EVERYONE (except me, my wife and a small selection of others) say EVERYTHING from the ***“Through him with him in him…” ***right through the "Our Father", the Exorcism prayer "Deliver us, Lord, from every evil, and grant us peace in our day…" the response ***“For the kingdom, the power, and the glory…”***AND the prayer for peace; "Lord Jesus Christ, you said to your apostles…"

I’ve heard priests asking, pleading and threatening people to stop, but it still continues.🤷

I also find it very irritating, but sure, what CAN you do?

When our previous pastor succumbed to cancer almost 4 1/2 years ago, the funeral Mass was concelebrated by a half dozen or so archbishops/bishops and well over 100 priests. At first I too was distracted when we got to this point in the Mass… until I realized that this was being said only by the concelebrants!
 
In Ireland it is common practice for the entire congregation to say
this and other parts of the Mass, as well as kneel for the entire Mass. I noticed this when I was there in August. Only two liturgies I attended resembled the new GIRM in any way–one of which the young priest had to tell people to stand and sit, etc. (in a positive, educational way). There’s nothing like tradition (whether “rubrically correct” or not)…

There is an older woman who does exactly this every time I see her at mass. I somehow can never get used to it and find it annoying. She mouths the priest’s words and then when it’s time for the parishioners’ responses or prayers; she says them extremely quickly leaving everyone else praying behind her. There’s also a man who shouts out the responses. I’m thinking it’s best for me to sit away from them.
