Saying the rosary

Not being a cradle Catholic and having been a lukewarm Catholic for a long time, but now being a very serious Catholic, I have a question about saying the rosary. Is it necessary to speak aloud when reciting a rosary? By this I mean saying one alone. Is it the same as a normal prayer in that you can do it in your head and not physically speak the words? Or is it necessary to speak them aloud?
 
You do not need to say them out loud. Remember though you are supposed to mediating on the mysteries not the words.
 
I had some questions about the Rosary because through it I believe my life was turned around and Christ truly entered into my life through His most Holy Mother.

It is my understanding that one should vocalize the prayers but they need not be audible. Sub-vocalize is probably the proper term.

Personally, I do find full vocalization or sub-vocalization helpful to stay undistracted when praying a repetitive prayer like the rosary or the chaplet of Divine Mercy, but it is not required.

When I’m alone I say the Rosary out loud, when I am out driving my wheelchair I say it mentally
