how is scandal delt with in the Catholic Church? If priest broke his vow of Celebacy but then repented, what are the consequences?

No one knows? I’m not trying to start a debate, I just want to know. Would he still be allowed to remain a Priest?

It’s probably up to the discretion of the Bishop.

I could see that a Church that preaches forgiveness would allow a repentant priest to return. But from what I’ve seen in our diocese is the Bishop encourages the priest to take a year off and decide for himself whether he should remain a priest or leave the priesthood. This has happened to our local priests for a variety of reasons, not necessarily infidelity. And some have returned, while others left.

Priests are humans too, subject to the same weaknesses and temptations that everyone else is. Remember only Jesus was/is perfect. Breaking a vow of celebracy or any other mortal sin would be serious, but I doubt grounds for dismissal from the priesthood.

I’m sure there are some rules that may call for dismissal, I would think after all the fanfare, pedophilia would be one of them.

There may be many saintly priests, but I’m sure there are many who struggle like the rest of us.

I know they are human. 🙂 Thanks for your answers.

I asked the question because something similar (Obviously not identical) happened in my protestant church and I was uncomfortable with how it was handled. That uncomfortableness made me wonder how other types of Churches handle such issues.
