Let’s cut to the chase: the University of San Diego, a ‘Catholic’ college, recently hosted a vulgar and absolutely erotic ‘drag show’ for “around 500 students.”

USD president defends drag show on campus, citing other Catholic schools that hold similar events – meanwhile, opposition mounts

There is a link to the actual event at the bottom of the story, it was videotaped by some audience member. Warning, the video, while not graphic, is very disturbing. Here is a brief quote from the story about the MC:
“Tootie Nefertootie” is a drag performer at, among other venues, Lips nightclub and restaurant in San Diego, which advertises itself as “the ultimate in drag dining.”
I believe the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence also had something to do with this.

Look, I am an open minded fellow, I frankly don’t care what people do on their time, however, let us not have these disgusting displays at an ostensibly CATHOLIC college and let them keep calling it a CATHOLIC college. I was hesistant to post this story, but people need to know about it outside the Southern California area.

The Vagina Monologues is one thing, I’d even argue, this was a blatantly homoerotic striptease for goodness sakes!

EDIT: It turns out, on closer, reading, that the drag show linked in the story was at Santa Clara University in 2010…not that this is any better, as SCU is supposedly a Catholic college too.

My college is having one of those travesties too. “Are you a Lady Monk?” I hope it fails. Besides, there’s no such thing as a lady ‘monk.’

Some Catholic colleges need to have their Catholic identity looked at seriously and revoked in some cases, because some colleges are Catholic-in-name-only.

News Update
With a half dozen protesters kneeling in prayer outside, seven cross-dressing performers danced and lip-synched to a sold-out crowd of 200 Wednesday night at the University of San Diego’s first-ever drag show.
Among the protesters outside the University Center was Fr. Jacob Bertrand of St. Rose of Lima Parish in Chula Vista. Fr. Bertrand told Fox5 News that the kneeling protesters were praying the Divine Mercy Chaplet and the Rosary.

Apparently a small group of counter-protesters showed up in support of the show, but the two groups of protesters were peaceful.

News media were not allowed admission, and videotaping of the show was not allowed.

Thanks for the Johnny-on-the-spot update Dale, much appreciated.

I just don’t understand this whole episode. Yes, of course, gender studies are of value for growth as a Catholic Christian, and implicit in that is the study of alternative lifstyles such as the ones lived by Mr. Nefertootie. And, also, the physical and psychological results of living such a lifestyle too.

But how can one call a drag show, more or less a burlesque show, educational? I went to a very liberal (UC) state college, and even there no one thought of doing things like drag shows, stripteases, et al. We studied them, yes, but there was never a drive to host such events. Why, oh why, is there apparently such a drive at Catholic universities?

Edit: I remember a male sexuality course being offered at my campus, and a lot of nonsense was associated with that course…‘parties’ at the professors apartment, trading pictures ofvarious anatomical features, etc. They even went, took a field trip, to a male strip club. But all these things were done off-campus! I am quite frankly agog at this whole thing.

They do this at Loyola University Chicago.

It’s funny, when I discuss how somethings that go on aren’t Catholic, the response of the typical “open-minded” students is, “Well, we’re a Jesuit school, not a Catholic school.”
My response:

I have been talking about this very same thing for a very long time. I think the problem is, and please someone correct me if I’m wrong, the Bishops really don’t have much say over the Catholic Colleges in their diocese? At least that is what I have read.
