I don’t know which way I’ll go, only God knows the answer to that. Question is: If a person enrolled in a Holy Scapular dies and is to be Cremated, what is the process? Cremate the body and Holy Scapular as one? Cremate the body with the Holy Scapular removed and place the Holy Scapular in an Urn? Do places that conduct these know what to do? Is there even communication between Catholic Churches and these facilities?

I know, strange and out of the blue question. I don’t know anyone in the situation, just interested in things some people can’t or forget to ask on this fine afternoon.

For lay Dominicans the scapular is traditionally placed on the foot of the coffin. Personally, I think it would be nice to entrust a scapular to a loved one or back to order so they can be used elsewhere.

Thanks for the response. However, I’m referring to the small Scapulars in regard to Catholic enrollees.

Funeral homes remove everything that is not part of the body. They will give it to your loved ones. We need not wear anything “special” into the next life.

Hmm. I’m trying to grasp a better understanding of the “Sabbatine Privilege” which I hope is obvious.

Thanks for the article link. The article did not really dismiss the concept. The word “hoax” is more appropriate for the Spaghetti Monster.

The Sabbatine Privilege is not a “hoax”. It is one of the most profound privileges granted to one who faithfully wears the the Brown Scapular. If at the moment of death one is clothed in the Brown Scapular, that soul, if it performed with diligence and piety the duties associated with the Brown Scapular, will receive the promised privileges. If the scapular is removed from the body after death, this is of little consequence. Although, it is not the traditional method of burial for a Catholic to be cremated and there is something comforting about being clothed in the Brown Scalular and wearing it at the resurrection on the last day.

An interesting aside: When the body of St. Alphonsus Ligouri was exhumed during the cause for his canonization, it was found that although his body and grave clothes had decayed, his Brown Scapular was perfectly intact.

One correction I would make is that the Privilege is not limited to the “Brown Scapular” in regard to small Scapulars. (I have been told all others retain the Privilege also)

Funny, my Irish husband has a real phobia about brown clothing because of this “privilege”. Says only people in a casket wear brown.

I’ll never understand those bloody Irishmen. (just kidding) 🙂
