Alan,

So sorry about the fire! The pictures look terrible - what a huge mess! Did the smoke damage ruin the rest of your house? No one was hurt I hope !!
No one was hurt, except a few blisters I got sometime about when I decided I could not handle the fire myself and got out. Those are gone now. The first floor had all the bedrooms, and some smoke, but the restoration people say that can all be cleaned.

The firemen were great. Most of my stuff is junky but I did have a couple Thomas Kinkade paintings and a 7 foot grand piano that would be maybe $35,000 to replace. While some firemen took the hose upstairs, others took the paintings off the wall downstairs, put them on the piano, and covered them with a big blanket to protect it. Yesterday the piano technician declared the piano undamaged by heat, fire or water. He will clean the piano for smoke, and if necessary restring it because said the smoke can linger in the coils of the bass strings.

The best news I heard yesterday is that since vinyl albums are not replaceable, the insurance company settles on them at $7.00 apiece. I will miss my old albums, but God willing, I will also enjoy the new stove I plan to buy with the money. (The stove was pretty messed up before the fire, but was not damaged in the fire so it is out of scope of the repairs.)

Let me tell you this: IMO, losing a bunch of stuff is nothing compared to mental illness or loss of a loved one. Fire is something people can easily see, understand, and help with. By golly we’ve had some of the best food we’ve had in a long time from parishioners, school parents, and friends cooking stuff for us.

Alan
