I have been searching about for a scapular medal to replace my Brown Scapular. This is allowed, but the norms and devotions are unchanged as I understand it.

Vendors abound on the internet identifying their medals under the general description “Scapular”, including some of which also offer Catholic Relics for sale on their sites. This is never allowed in my experience. Anyway…

Here we read the description of how this medal should be rendered according to the Holy Office [December 16, 1910].
catholicculture.org/docs/doc_view.cfm?recnum=5197

So, it seems what would well serve is a medal with Our Lady of Mt. Carmel on the front [obverse or principal side] and the image of the Sacred Heart of Christ on the back. I must have this wrong since I can’t find this medal at all, but the most reputable manufacturers including Creed Rosary Manufacturing [MA] offer its polar opposite - Sacred Heart on the front as the principal image and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, much diminished, on the back side as their Scapular medal.

If any here can correct my misunderstanding and/or direct me to a site where I might discover the medal described by the Holy Office, I would very much appreciate it.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Ok, forgive my dumb question, but… how exactly can you be sure which side of a medal is the front or the back? I mean, isn’t that like saying you need a quarter with the head side and the tail side reversed? Doesn’t it amount to the same thing?

I am curious about the answer though, because I will be searching for a scapular medal myself soon. Hopefully someone knows.

JezuUfamTobie,

The typical construction of these medals makes it apparent which side is intended as “the front”. See this link: catholicstore.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=11754 for a picture of what I mean when I say “much diminished” rendering of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel - still, identified as a “Scapular” medal.

I think any of these with the correct images on two sides would serve the purpose, but my own preference runs to the primary image [on the front] being Our Lady of Mt. Carmel.

I may have to give up my scruples in this regard if help is not forthcoming, but I yet hope the popularity of devotion to the Brown Scapula, here at CA , will yield the answers we both seek.

Thanks for the reply.

Why not get another scapular?

On a somewhat related topic, my medal has Ste.Therese de Lisieux on one side and the Virgin of Carmel on the other, and I am quite blessed that both sides can equally be considered the “front”, and so usually I have Ste. Therese forward, but just to switch it up sometimes, I…switch it up 😛

Hehe, … I bought an Infant of Prague medal recently purely because of the striking image of the Sacred Heart on the back. Needless to say, poor Infant Jesus never makes an appearance as the front … :o

I have a scapular medal that has the Sacred Heart of Jesus on the front, at least Jesus should always be in front, and it has Our Lady of Mount Carmel on the back… This is considered an authentic scapular medal, despite what others may say.
This medal can be found at any catholic religious store or you can order one from Leaflet Missal 1-800-328-9582

Please check out this official site from the Holy See and the Carmelite Order. Simply, the Scapular Medal must have on one side an image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and on the other side, any image of the Virgin Mary. The scapular medal that I wear in physical therapy and while swimming and in the shower, has the Sacred Heart on one side and Our Lady of Czestohowa of Poland on the other. As I am Polish I particularly like this Image of the Virgin. Blessings, Polishman
