I’ve seen both the white Scapular and the brown Scapular. What is the difference between the two? Is there truth to the message saying that whomever dies wearing this won’t experience eternal fire (hell)?

These are not “magic” get out of jail free cards.
You have to, in good faith and intent, commit to the devotions these represent.
If you die, are not in mortal sin, commited to the devotion, and it is God’s will: then you may very well earn the promises these imply.

You might find the following article on scapular devotions at EWTN to be helpfull: ewtn.com/library/mary/scapular.htm

Such promises look at the soul of a man, not his actions.

It’s just the same as the promises associated with the Rosary. Whoever meditates daily on the joys, sorrows and glories of Jesus and His Mother will surely not be lost.

This is not because you are fulfilling a requirement of reciting them daily-- it is because if you genuinely recite them daily you cannot help but to be transformed within by God’s grace. Similarly, if you wear the scapular and say “all I must do is wear it, even while I lie in sin!” then you will maybe not be saved.

In wearing it genuinely, you will often reflect on Mary and Jesus, and in keeping the scapular close to your heart you will hopefully be more aware of disciplining yourself and staying away from sin for love of Jesus and Mary. It’s this that will save you, not the scapular itself.

Whoever dies wearing this scapular… there is wearing it, and then there is *wearing *it. You understand the difference I mean, right?

In addition to the EWTN link which is great, this is a more concise form of the scapulars.

This link has a lot of info about the brown scapular:

Be sure not to treat your scapular flippantly saying to yourself: it is not the scapular that grants salvation. True, it isn’t, but a cup with a clean inside and filthy outside is just the opposite of the Pharisees and not much better. Therefore abide by the rules of its use.

It’s true.

Pope John Paul II wore one his whole life, a picture here of when he was younger.

(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

Pope John Paul II insisted doctors not remove his brown scapular during surgery on him following the assassination attempt in May 1981. Father Mariano Cera, a Carmelite priest, told Inside the Vatican: “Just before the Holy Father was operated on, he told the doctors ‘Don’t take off the scapular.’ And the surgeons left it on.” Pope John Paul was convinced that Our Lady of Mount Carmel, along with Our Lady of Fatima, saved him from the bullets of Mehmet Ali Agca. The pontiff, a Secular Order Carmelite, has worn the scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel since he was a young boy. He frequently asks Our Lady of Mount Carmel to help him make important decisions.

What is the difference in them though? The white Scapular and the brown Scapular? Is there any?

There are lots of scapulars out there. Most originate from different religious roders. The brown scapular is normally the Carmelite scapula. Supposedly given to Saint Simon Stock (an Englishman) by Our Lady in a vision.

The white scapular is has something to do with the Trinity. I think it might belong originally to an order called the Order of the Holy Trinity, or something like that.

The wikipedia page on scapulars is actually pretty substantial.

If you really want to learn about the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel…

carmelitanacollection.com/catechesis.html

That’s a joint text from both OCD and O.Carm, from fourteen years ago. As far as I am aware it is the most accurate and definitive information available (I can find almost no reliable information about any other scapular with the exception of the Blue Scapular which is now promulgated by the Marian Fathers).

Read this, also.

I was told that the Green Scapular is powerful for healing.

The green scapular is also known for its conversion of souls to the Catholic faith. You will often hear about people sharing this scapular with someone who is not Catholic or hiding it near a non catholic (under a matress or something like that) in the hope and prayer that they will convert.
