I’m new to the site and hope this is the right place for posting such questions.

I’m thinking of getting a brown scapular. I wear a Saint Joseph medal and would like to put in on the scapular rather than wear it from the chain. Is that alright? Do people put extra medals on their scapulars?

Thanks

I’ve seen it done, often with a St. Benedict medal, Miraculous Medal or crucifix. I don’t think anyone would have any issues with it. It is, after all, a garment, and as with any garment, you can pin medals or badges on them.

Just don’t overdo it, lest you end up jingling all over the place wherever you walk.

One is certainly free to attach a medal of Saint Joseph to the Brown Scapular, if one wishes. Since Saint Joseph appeared in the final series of visions at Fatima…during which the Blessed Virgin appeared as Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, while holding forth the scapular, an event which Sister Lucia explained was an expression of the desire that the Brown Scapular be used as a sign of consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary…it is fitting to join the two sacramentals. One may use the scapular as a means of wearing other medals

In order to have all the spiritual benefits you should, I recommend, be actually invested with the Brown Scapular by a priest or deacon, using the rite contained in the Book of Blessings/Roman Ritual. The medal of Saint Joseph should be also blessed.

The symbolism of wearing the actual scapular is certainly richer than the use of the medal…however, in terms of efficacy, the actions of Pope Saint Pius X make the scapular medal no less efficacious than the cloth scapular just as praying the luminous mysteries are as valid an expression of the rosary as are the other three sets of mysteries. Those decisions rest with the Supreme Pontiff, who has complete authority over regulating sacramentals.
