I just got my Brown Scapular in the mail today (well, yesterday technically: Friday, it is now Saturday). Can I wear it before it is blessed and I am invested?
Yes, go ahead and start wearing it. When the opportunity arises, have a priest enroll you in it. (Make sure to carry the enrollment prayers with you, so that if by chance you encounter a priest who is willing to do it for you, you are ready for him.)

I still have not gotten enrolled yet, but when I do, can I ask the Priest if I can say the Chaplet of Divine Mercy instead of the Rosary/Little Office. I find I prefer the CoDM over the Rosary; however, I worry that am I just being lazy since the CoDM is shorter than the Rosary.

The choices are either the Rosary or the Little Office. There is no option for the Divine Mercy Chaplet, although certainly you could add it in as an extra devotion, as well. 🙂

Well, the Priest officially invested/enrolled me in the Brown Scapular after Mass today! I will now be praying the Rosary daily.

Did it invalidate the enrollment/investiture that the Priest accidentally omitted the following words (they are bolded and in italics):
Priest - Show us, O Lord, Thy mercy.
Respondent- And grant us Thy salvation.
Priest - Lord, hear my prayer.
Respondent - And let my cry come unto Thee.
Priest - The Lord be with you.
Respondent - And also with you.
Priest - Lord Jesus Christ, Savior of the human race, sanctify by Thy power these scapulars, which for love of Thee and for love of Our lady of Mount Carmel, Thy servants will wear devoutly, so that through the intercession of the same Virgin Mary, Mother of God, and protected against the evil spirit, they persevere until death in Thy grace. Thou who lives and reigns world without end. Amen.
THE PRIEST SPRINKLES HOLY WATER AND INVESTS PERSON(S) WHILE SAYING:
Receive this blessed Scapular and beseech the Blessed Virgin that through Her merits, you may wear it without stain. May it defend you against all adversity and accompany you to eternal life. Amen.
AFTER THE INVESTITURE THE PRIEST CONTINUES WITH THE PRAYERS:
I, by the power vested in me, admit you to participate in all the spiritual benefits obtained through the mercy of Jesus Christ by the Religious Order of Mount Carmel.
In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
May God Almighty, the Creator of Heaven and earth, bless you, He who has deigned to join you to the confraternity of the Blessed Virgin Of Mount Carmel; we beseech Her to crush the head of the ancient serpent so that you my enter into possession of your eternal heritage, through Christ our Lord.
Respondent - Amen.
He accidentally (I assume it was an accident) omitted “and of the Son”. When I mentioned it right after the investment occurred, he said not to worry about it, but my Scrupulous is still bothering me a little bit. What say others? Specifically, if you were me, would you just listen to the Priest and stop worrying?

God heard the intentions of his heart, and yours. That’s what counts. 🙂

God is the opposite of a computer - a computer does precisely what you actually told it to do - not what you intended to tell it to do. God, on the other hand, does for us what we would like Him to do, and what is good for us - even if we misspeak, or forget a word here or there in the prayer.

Hello!

I have some information that might be of interest about the Scapular.

You can print off a copy of the Little Office at:

www.ewtn.com/library/PRAYER/LITTLE.TXT

The longer more traditional version of the Office can be found and printed at:

//campus.udayton.edu/mary//prayers/LittleOfficeBVM.htm

Also if time is a concern, the sabbatine priviledge allows with the priests permission to give us meat on Saturdays and Wednesdays, in lieu of the Office or Rosary.

I gave up the meat, but still try and do the rosary at least 5 or 6 days a week. If time allows I do the Office.

Just thought I’d share!

God Bless!

I still sometimes worry that by the Priest omitting ‘and of the Son’ in the Prayers of Investiture, it somehow messed it up. Am I just being Scrupulous here?

Does wearing the scapular “all the time” include sleeping? Thanks, KC

Hi all - I’m jumping in here on the caboose of this post . . . I love my brown scapular so much that I can’t resist putting in my 2 cents!

I’ve worn my brown scapular since September 11, 2006. I knew when I put it on that morning that it wasn’t coming off (at least intentionally.) I became a Catholic on April 22, 2008 and was enrolled in the brown scapular on September 11, 2008. Just a comment to show how powerful wearing the brown scapular is!

Although I have permission to pray the rosary instead of the Little Office, I have 3 different editions of the Little Office and I pray one of them daily. The Morning and Evening prayers are usually all I have time for, but I like the mid-day prayers also. They break up the day nicely and de-stress me while I’m at work. I also pray the rosary daily.

Wearing the brown scapular means wearing it all the time, but I do have three personal exceptions: While showering; during ‘marital relations’; and during a medical exam or procedure (although the physicians and nurses I know have all said “Oh, you can leave that on.”).

True: I have only fogotten to put my brown scapular back on after my morning shower once in nearly 3 years. And that was also the only day someone - an elderly lady - asked me if I wore the brown scapular. I’m convinced that was our Blessed Mother speaking to me!

I highly recommend the brown scapular to everyone.

Last night, for the first time, I left my brown scapular on when I went to bed. Pleased to report I didn’t wake up with it wound tightly around my neck as I had feared!
I love the Holy Rosary and the Brown Scapular! --Kimberly

I wear mine while I sleep too. I do take it off when bathing though.

I have been trying to do the first 5 Saturdays for the past two years now. I have never been able to get 5 consecutive Saturdays in. Even though I understand that we can go 1 week before or after the first Saturday, it stills seems like I end up missing a consecutive Saturday within the 5 months, then I have to start all over again. This seems weird or should I say mystery, because I believe this is God’s way of telling me that I need to go to confession every Saturday or chance that I can get to go.

I find that if I don’t stick to my confession schedule, that it is too easy to let it slide for a long while. Right now it has been 2 months since my last confession

As for my scapular, I do take it off to bathe and I find that swimming in it doesn’t work too well! lol I sometimes leave it off for sleeping also because my hair does get tangled up in it.
