i have been wearing a scapular after my first communion… i think!!
i just know i have been wearing it all my life…

do the scapulars have to be blessed before wearing…?? i got a bunch of them from my parents but i dont think they blessed them before giving them to me…

Once a person has been enrolled in the Brown Scapular, usually in connection with First Communion, replacement scapulars do not have to be blessed.

It is related to the large scapular worn by Carmelites (who wear a traditional habit that includes the scapular). The religious receives his/her first scapular as part of a ceremony and with time, that scapular has to be replaced which it is without any further ceremony or blessing.

Other religious orders have a scapular as part of their habits, but our brown scapular comes from the Carmelites.

Should the old scapulars still be burnt or buried in the same manner that blessed items are? I have always burnt old scapulars.

as of now, i have held onto all the broken ones as i did not know what to do with them…

what would u do with the ashes after you burnt them? i was planning on leaving them at the church hoping that they would properly dispose of them…

To destroy the old scapulars to the point of no longer being recognized as scapulars is simply a matter of respect for the religious images which shouldn’t be part of a trash collection.

As far as the ashes from burning the scapulars are concerned, they are just that. Dispose of them as you would any other ashes. There is no element of disrespect in that.

I have never done anything special with the ashes from burning any sacramental. I usually use the barbeque for the burning.
