Lots of discussion around scapulars has lead me to an interest in them. I understand what they are, my questions surround the etiquitte (sp?) of wearing them.

I can understand taking them off for showering or swimming (although I hear that some people don’t). What about other activities where wearing something around your neck could be difficult? Specifically, my dd dances ballet. Jewlery, especially necklaces are frowned on. Obviously a cloth necklace isn’t going to hurt her like a chain might, but would it be OK for her to take it off for classes?

And for performances (dance or acting) where it might show because of a costume, is it usual to take it off then? Or do folks simply give up those types of activities?

Curious as to how others have handled situations like those.

I see this as an interesting dilemma. Once vested in a scapular and once a person has a full understanding of what it is and what it requires, you should not ever want to remove it. Instead one should want to remove themselves from the activity or situation that temps them to remove the scapular.

Oh c’mon, no showering or swimming? No sports or ballet? I don’t think that’s what Our Lady had in mind.

I’d suggest your daughter get a Scapular medal for those times when she can’t wear anything around her neck.

She should always be able to pin it somewhere inside a costume or sports gear. I have a Miraculous Medal and occasionally have done the same.
