How clever to suit up as a servant of the Handmaid of the Lord. Nothing lower. The humble shall be exalted. A scapular is a servant’s garb, like overalls, and in the case of the brown wool scapular of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, is a mini-habit of the Carmelites order. The Carmelites were the last Catholic order to be expelled from the Holy Land by the Muslims from their Old Testament, Baal-busting site on Mt. Carmel.

So Mt. Carmel is the symbol for deciding between truth and falsity. St. Simon Stock lived in a hollow tree mourning this disastrous expulsion from the Holy Land. And Our Lady appeared and gave this brown, wool habit to replace the gaudy wide stripes of their order. Our Lady promised that one day through the Rosary and the Scapular of Mt. Carmel she would save the day, bringing rescue on the order of the Old Testament’s Queen Esther I should think.

Scapulars are revealed by mystics and later adopted by the Church. The green scapular of Justine Bisqueburyu is particularly efficacious in conversions, usually being hidden among the belongings of one who is in need of conversion. Many have found the green wool scapular repels evil people.

To further elaborate: Our Lady appeared to St. Simon Stock in the year 1251 at Alysford England and promised; if anyone faithfully wear the scapular…“at the hour of their death she will see to it they will not see the fires of hell”.

The Carmelites were in a difficult position in western Europe at the time, being a religious congregation with an “eastern” flavor. There were still Carmelites on Mt Carmel, but the establishment in Europe was a new situation and they were not always made to feel welcome.

This fortuitous event helped resolve their difficulties.
