Some people just have them because they were gifts. They store them in a personal spot. A wallet is a good location.

By definition a scapular is a garment and is intended to be worn as a physical reminder of how we are to act and behave in our outward actions.

What exactly are scapulars and why are they worn?
I received my scapular a few years ago. There are a few promises I made when I received it which I keep(most of the time-I do miss the mark every now and then)Different folks get different ones for different reasons. Some take the scapular of their patron saint. Some take one from an order.I was enrolled in Mt.Carmel.Which,I believe,is the original scapular. It is made out of 2 squares of rough brown wool attached with string so that one piece lays behind me on my back and one lays in front on my chest. It also has a tiny crucifix attached to it and a medal of St.Benedict.I have made promises to pray pretty much non-stop at all times.Which is difficult.Because the world pretty much gets in the way.It also calls for obedience, chastity and poverty, according to my station in life.Which, since I am not leading a consecrated life after the fashion of a monk, but more as an oblate(sort of)means that I basically do what I am told by the authorities I have chosen to be above me.(elected officials as pertains to the law of the land;Ny boss at work;My priest and the magisterium of the Church.I am engaged to be married which means no pre-marital sex,and I don’t look at provocative pictures or TV and I don’t ‘touch myself’.As far as poverty is concerned,I lead as simple a life as I can within the needs and responsibilities of my bills and basic necessities.I donate time and money to charities of various sorts depending on who needs what.
When I forget to remain in a vigilant state of prayer,I notice that the rough wool wears on my skin and begins to leave a rash.Oddly enough, this is consistent with my lapse in attentiveness and not a coincidence.
On a material level,I find that when I do well in my discipline everything runs very smoothly and I get convenient parking spaces and all sorts of ‘good luck’(for lack of a better term).I am also Vegan.Which is ultra-strict vegetarian.I don’t smoke.Rarely drink.and when I do it is not strong liquor. Usually only quality beer.and that NOT to get drunk.
Some people wear scapulars because they think they are cool. Some do it out of cultural identity as being Catholic.
It is a spiritual discipline which I believe draws me closer to Jesus and Our Lady.It is actually very humbling and in spite of how it sounds it does not lend itself to a false sense of spiritual superiority.
😊 So,there you have it.Everyone knows about That One Guy,now.

A scapular is an apron-like garmet which is worn as part of the habit of many religious orders. In this photo, the black thing is a scapular:

Some Catholic laypeople wear small “token” scapulars which represent some private devotion, and the scapular is an outward sign and reminder of this devotion (just like a religious habit). There are many types of scapulars representing many devotions.

One very popular scapular is the Brown Scapular of Mt. Carmel. Unfortunately, these scapulars often have some text on the obverse containing a “promise” supposedly dictated by St. Simon Stock to his secretary, Peter Swanyngton, in 1251. However, although the brown scapular itself is well documented, there is no historical record of this “promise” before 1642, and no reasonable historian believes the “promise” to be genuine.

The Catholic Encyclopedia has a good entry on scapulars (including the Brown Scapular):

Well, if you put that thing in your wallet, you’d be sitting pretty high.
lol
Thanks, I learned something today.
