scapulars??

HI šŸ™‚

Iā€™ve been hearing about scapulars for a while but I donā€™t really know much about them. What exactly are they for?? I know there are different types, like the Carmel scapular or the green scapularā€¦

how would one obtain a scapular? is this something you ask your priest about? I know you should get them blessedā€¦ can anyone get one?

A scapular looks like a necklace with two postage stamp looking pieces of wool. One goes in the front of your body, in front of the breast bone and the other side hangs in the back.

There are websites that you can get free scapulars, just Google it.

There are certain promises attached to scapulars. The brown scapular was given to St. Simon Stock a few years ago (1200s I think) The BVM promised to release from purgatory one who wears this garment as long as the person dies wearing it, chaste according to oneā€™s state of life, and prays the Little Office of BVM daily. One must be enrolled into the confraternity and with the permission of a priest, one can pray a daily Rosary in place of the Little Office.

I got my scapular for about eight dollars, and it included literature on it form the Franciscan Center on River Road in Lawrence Mass. Give them a call, they could hook you up.

Also check out fisheaters.com/scapulars.html itā€™s a great website although many people here may not like it as it is traditional in nature.

thank you for the detailed response! šŸ™‚ I read the linkā€¦ thereā€™s one thing Iā€™m unsure about though, - about the brown scapular, is enrollment necessary or does the priest just say the ā€œinvestmentā€ prayers? Orā€¦is this the same thing? what IS enrollment? lol I think thatā€™s what Iā€™m confused about. Also, to wear the brown scapular, one (if a lay person) need not be a Third Order Secular Carmelite, right? Other than that,

ā€¦this is pretty interesting! šŸ™‚

As far as I know, enrollment and investment are the same. It is a short ceremony, mine was five minutes, and itā€™s a special blessing and promise on your part to uphold your end of the bargain; to pray the office, llive chaste etc. I do recommend contacting the Franciscan Center, and purchase a scapular, I canā€™t remember all the ceremony.

No, one doesnā€™t have to be a third order.
I think I am leaving something out, but I am chasing my two year old son around the house and trying to cook simultaneously.

Oki soā€¦ you buy a scapular, get it blessed, then the priest enrolls you, and then you follow the ā€˜instructionsā€™ (from lack of a better wordā€¦)

I just found this on the ewtn website:
The short form of investing or conferral consists of a priest or deacon taking a blessed scapular and while placing it over their head reciting with the person any Marian prayer (e.g. Hail Mary, Memorare, Salve Regina). The person is now invested. They donā€™t have any lists to join, though they are henceforth members of the Scapular Confraternity and share in its spiritual benefits (the prayers of the members).

if you buy one, - letā€™s say at a Catholic gift store, or if you get one online, - how do you tell if itā€™s properly made? Iā€™m sure most or all of them are alright, but whatā€™s the most ā€˜typicalā€™ or ā€˜traditionalā€™ form of the brown scapularā€¦for exampleā€¦ are the images only on one side of the wool square?
andā€¦hereā€™s something Iā€™ve always wondered, how big are they? ā€¦one inch by one inch?

You know, tell me some of your favorite saints. Mine is Padre Pio, so my scapular that I got from the Center is a third degree relic. So, tell me some of your favorite saints and Iā€™ll see what I can do.

thatā€™s so nice but donā€™t feel obligated or anything šŸ™‚ well my favourite Saint would have to be St Therese of Lisieux.

Does the Center have a website by any chance?

šŸ™‚ this is really interestingā€¦ I think this would have to be my favourite scapular Iā€™ve read about so far; as I have a devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and Carmel has been the religious order Iā€™ve been drawn to the most; I like their Saints and spirituality in general.

If it is a brown scapular then it is the scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. It can have no images at all on it and be a brown scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Some do like to have the image of their favorite saint on it.

Not all have the St. Benedict and the Crucifix on it, but it is good to have those sacramentals also.

The Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is actually a miniature ā€œhabitā€ of the Carmelite order, which has one panel of brown material in the front, and one in the back.

Chaste simply means fighting especially against sins of the flesh (pornography, masturbation, lust, pre- or extra-marital sex and so on). Obviously the requirements vary according to whether or not one is married.
