I’m in RCIA right now and recently I’ve started to become afraid that the things I’ve done are unforgiveable… I was involved in some really evil stuff. Really really evil. What if I get baptised and the water starts to burn me or something??? Has anyone ever heard of this happening??? Please can someone answer me? I don’t really want to talk about what I did except to say that I was being used by the devil to hurt other people really badly.

Thank you anyone who can respond…

Calm down. Baptism washes away ALL sin.

You need the counsel of a holy priest. Not random people on the internet. Set up an appointment with your priest to talk about your fears.

The only thing to worry about is the fact that you may get a little bit wet 😉

Nobody is past redemption. You are taking big step to washing away evil in your life and putting yourself on the path of (positive!) transformation.

Just remember, it’s the start of a journey, not the end of a journey, you will fall and stumble many times along the road, but Jesus and His most wonderful Sacrament of Reconciliation is there to lift you back up each and every time. The one sin to avoid is despair. That one is tough to overcome.

And when you have trouble forgiving yourself, God will forgive you anyway when you ask Him through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. That you can count on.

A side note on confession: I always enter the confessional full of dread, but always exit the confessional as if floating on a cloud! That helps me overcome the dread before I go in because I know I will feel great afterwards.

The past is past. If you have made a commitment to become a member of the Catholic Church, your history is forgiven. If there’s something in your past life that’s bothering you, speak to your priest about it. He’s probably heard worse - and he’s cheaper than a therapist.

You’ll not be burned by the waters of Baptism. They put out the fire of sin rather than ignite it.

Thank you… this is a really nice message. I can’t wait to be Catholic, I’m just scared that I’ve done too many bad things.

Thank you for this reassurance! I hope you’re right!!

Welcome home!

Bad things are just that - Bad. But never place a limit on God or his mercy. God forgives all things, if you are willing to accept and seek his forgiveness. You will be fine, with God on your side 🙂 There is no such thing as “too many” when it comes to God.

Oh, it’s just that jerk the devil again.

Don’t let his imposed doubts sway your mind. He doesn’t want you to do something that will mark you permanently for God.

You think?? Ahhg. I’m still afraid. Trying to put this fear away.

*Luke 15:21-24

21 “The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’

22 “But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. 23 Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. 24 For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.*

There is no burning or punishment when you return to the arms of the Father when you are Baptized, only love and life! He doesn’t want you to be afraid of Him.

Thank you so much… This almost made me cry. I truly feel unworthy, just like this says. It’s hard to believe a sinner like me could ever be good enough for God Almighty!

Outside of a Hollywood movie where an exorcist or what have you throws holy water on a demon, I’ve never, ever heard of anyone burning up during baptism. I think the Ol’ Scratch, aka. the Devil is having fun with giving you crazy thoughts, in a bid to try and keep you from crossing the Tiber.

Thanks… I guess I’m afraid that those scenes in movies come from somewhere. May God rebuke the devil, we humbly pray!!!

A lot of times it happens that the closer one gets to Baptism or to reception into the Church, the more the Evil One tries to prevent it. A typical way is to make the person feel they are such sinners that they can’t be forgiven. Which is a lie from the pit of hell. Or they will start to have doubts. They may even find themselves tempted to sin. Be prepared for this so you can recognize it when it happens. Pray to the Holy Spirit and ask for the intercession of Mary and St Michael the archangel.

What is happening to you is not all that unusual–I hope knowing that helps.

your fears are groundless but for your own peace of mind ask for an appointment to speak with the priest about them now, so the rest of your preparation can proceed more smoothely. The feeling is called compunction and it is part of the conversion process as we come to see and understand what we have done, its effects, and the reasons why our sinful actions were so bad. The rites of Lent by the way are designed specifically to aid the conversion process and help you through these very natural feelings and strengthen you for the sacraments.

welcome home

Thank you… I hope that this is what’s happening. I hope this fear will go away as I get sooner to baptism. Part of my fear, also, is that a bunch of my extended family members are going to be there to watch… what if something terrible happens and they all see? Ahhh.

Hail Mary, full of Grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

Thank you… I’m partly scared of doing this because I already had a meeting with the priest and said many terrible things I had done… I’m only just now realizing that there were a lot more things that I didn’t mention. Should I go to a different priest? I’m ashamed at how many scary things I’ve done and been through…
