Catholic Cardinal Ridicules ‘Semi-Religious’ Belief in Global Warming…

By + Cardinal George Pell
Archbishop of Sydney
18 February 2007

Global warming doomsdayers were out and about in a big way recently, but the rain came in Central Queensland and then here in Sydney. January also was unusually cool.

We have been subjected to a lot of nonsense about climate disasters as some zealots have been painting extreme scenarios to frighten us. They claim ocean levels are about to rise spectacularly, that there could be the occasional tsunami as high as an eight story building, the Amazon basin could be destroyed as the ice cap in the Arctic and in Greenland melts.

An overseas magazine called for Nuremberg-style trials for global warming skeptics while a U.S.A. television correspondent compared skeptics to “holocaust deniers”.

The Cardinal is a very sensable man!👍
Indeed – in a debate where sense is lacking.

When some nations made it against the law to deny the Holocaust, they shattered the concept of Free Speech.

So now we see those advocating laws against “Global Warming Deniers.” And we will soon see people advocating laws against people who disagree with them on other matters.

I think you and I are on the same page. Someone has every right to deny the Holocaust and I have every right to show the proof that it did indeed happen and think/call them an idiot if they refuse to accept the proof.

I have a right to question that global warming is caused by man if it is indeed occurring. Those who believe it is have every right to show their proof and think/call me an idiot if I refuse to accept it. They must show me the proof though before I will be convienced.

The best way to deal with Holocaust deniers is to let them speak – the only people they can convince are those who already believe their nonsense. The danger lies not in letting them speak, but in denying them the right to speak.

The old “Better to keep you mouth shut and be thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubt!”😃

Something the opponents of free speech would do well to remember. To deny others the right to speak is both tyranny and stupidity.

The REALLY unique aspect to the Catholic Cardinal’s statement is that it reflects the experience of the SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE!

What has been happening is that every time the weather in the Northern Hemisphere hiccups warmer, the advocates for AGW (manmade global warming) issue a hue & cry for global warming.

HOWEVER, on another climate web site, posters from Australia and New Zealand and also Argentina have been complaining that contrary to the experience of the Northern Hemisphere, the Southern Hemisphere has been having substantially colder temperatures. BUT, the MSM has been ignoring the data and anecdotes that are counter to the prevailing beliefs about AGW.

Well can someone with the knowledge tell me what the world was doing wrong when it went through the ice age.

Well, we know that the ice has been melting on Mars. Presumptively, that was caused by our driving SUV’s here on Planet Earth.

So, maybe they used to drive SUV’s on Mars … and that’s what caused the melting of the glaciers on Earth.

The debate would be a lot more productive if people didn’t keep on making strawmen.

Have you seen any credible person who states that climate change theory implies that there have been no natural changes of climate in the past? No. So, what does this have to do with it?

As I seem to write in every single thread on this subject, no-one is denying that the climate changes naturally over time. The climate change theory is precisely that the current warming is far beyond anything that would happen naturally.

Agreed.

Actually something definitely is going on with worldwide weather, so maybe some of the predictions about the science confusing the people, and the people looking to science for an answer are coming true.

Someday they may waken up and see that science doesn’t have the answer, only God.

And old man here in Ireland said to me one time, “the weather is as good as the people” there may be some truth in that.

Or the moon buggy possibly, or that other six wheeled monster on mars, (I think)

The alleged current anthropogenic warming is solely and completely a figment of a computer-gamed imagination.

And I write in almost every one of these threads, prove it is man made and ask what reasonable solution(s) do people who believe it is man made propose. I ask for firm, workable solutions, not things like reduce emissions. I want to know how we do that and what the cost in money and jobs will be. Is that so hard to answer?

Surely any prediction of future climate has to involve computer number-crunching? I agree that we have to look with more scepticism on a computer model than on a theory already tried and tested, but we do know the underlying principles behind the models (and if we’re not sure about what the limit case may be, we can look over at Venus).

There is enough evidence there to prove it to my satisfaction. I can hardly construct a prima facie case personally though, as it’s not my area of expertise. I can only critically look at the evidence presented and draw my own conclusions, drawing on my experience and knowledge of the scientific process. (And in case people wonder, I don’t accept everything scientists say at all, even when they are in reasonable consensus. For example, sticking my neck out a bit here, I think superstring theory is largely nonsense and far from even being particularly scientific).

I’ve had a couple of goes at this, even if I didn’t get as far as perhaps I’d have liked. I’ll let someone else have a go 🙂
