I agree. The written word is much more frightening then the movies. I read IT as an Adult and to this day, I can not stand on a rain gutter. I even caught myself warning my daughter not to stand on one.:o Here I am a grown woman afraid that some imaginary creature.

I think that Stephen King is so scary because his characters are so normal. He gets into their heads and hearts which makes them seem real.
I think that IT the movie was ridiculous and had Hollywood stayed true to the book, it would have been terrifying. Instead, they ruined it. I will say, however, that their casting was pretty good…not as I would have imagined, but pretty good.

Do you know that King is regarded as one of the Great American Authors? If you look critically at his work, you see that he has the ability to bring time periods to life. Look at the 50’s…one can TASTE the cherry coke and actually SEE the surroundings, HEAR the music, FEEL the atmosphere, be PART of the culture…it’s incredible. Stand By Me is one of the best movies ever and for once, Hollywood was true to the story. (SK’s “The Body”)

It takes a true gift to be able to do as King has done.

I love his work…not all of it, but I have to say he is not just a horror writer. Much of what he has done can be classified otherwise, but the media has “typed” him as horror only. How sad…so many people are now turned off and prevented from reading his other words just by media reputation.

I think tha tthe Exorcist would still scare me but because I am a mother now and worry about my kids. There was a television movie called a Haunting in Connecticut. It was supposed to be a true story of demonic possesion. Scared the wits out of me.
A haunting in Connecticut, the former funeral home possessed by demons.Yes, I saw that one.It was really scary and I liked it,I even taped it.👍

* The Ring. I first saw it last winter when I picked up the DVD at a half-price books store. I made the mistake of watching it by myself on a lazy Sunday afternoon…with the drapes wide open. It was a gloomy day, and that night I could not sleep. This movie, for some reason, terrified me to the core so I haven’t watched it since. I’m saving it for a “scary movie” fest, hoping for a time to pick it apart with other people to make it less scary.

Which version did you see, the English, or the original Japanese? The Japanese is more frightening, and yes there are I think three episodes of it (The Ring, The Ring 2 and The Ring 3) plus Ring-O, which tells of the origin of Sadako (the girl that comes out of the screen, if you have seen only the English version).

I’ve only seen the English version, and the Ring 2 only recently (relatively) was released. I think it’s on PPV, but I won’t order it. :o I’m too scared.

Why is the Japanese version more frightening? What is different in the presentation?

Maybe it’s because of the way it’s presented, or maybe because Sadako is more frightening, or maybe because I’m just biased with the original.

Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho was really creepy and the original Jaws made me afraid of showers and ocean water.

But I agree that the Exorcist and Night of the Living Dead are the 2 scariest movies ever.

Any movie that’s supposed to be scary scares the daylights out of me. My husband keeps saying he’s going to block the Travel channel because I keep watching those haunted house programs. 😛 It’s so interesting but it still scares me.

I haven’t seen many scary movies because I just don’t like them. And I know they will freak me out. The last one I saw was The Ring and that did me in for a few more years.

The one that didn’t scare me that much and I was surprised was “The Village” - the previews looked scary but then I was cool with it.

Normally, though, I’m scared of everything.

I have to agree with those who said “The Shining”. Jack got a little too convincing in that one. Some of the classic black and white horror films (Cheney’s wolfman, Lugosi’s Dracula, Psycho) scared the heck out of me when I was a kid…really ruined my shower time. Slasher movies (Halloween et al) are sick. Never understood the appeal. The Exorcist didn’t scare me as much as the whole subject of possesion. After seeing the movie, I read Hostage to the Devil by Fr. Malachi Martin…five documented cases of demonic possession, followed by a theological discussion of free will. That book made a grown up Catholic out of me.

I’m not much of a blood and guts horror type of movie person, but I thought JAWS was the scariest I’ve ever seen.

As for ‘funny stupid’ movies I’d say: Child’s Play ,Maximun Overdrive, and Year of the Comet. (I thought these were so BAD that they could be considered Bmovies).

All you have to do to avoid sharks is stay out of the Ocean. With vampires on the loose, you have to stay awake all night.

But as an Eastern European, I tend to cook with garlic and I do have a crucix in every room in the apartment. So, I’m well protected! 😉 :yup: And with my brother as a priest, I can have ALL the Holy Water I ever needed! 🙂

I agree! I don’t think I saw Year of the Comet, but the other two are a hoot! I know there’s others out there.

Like “Night of the Living Dead”.

On one hand, it freaked me out, but the scariest scene was also the funniest:

The scene in the basement area where they open this big wooden door and a big decayed black thing with bulging eyes steps out, licks lips that aren’t there while saying “Brains!”

We used to have a creepy basement with a similar door to our icky storage room…after I saw that movie I expected that thing to be there!

But then, it makes me laugh because it’s ridiculous!

I’m thinking the movie is classified as horror-comedy.

I saw “The Ring” in the theater. I hadn’t heard any hype or read a review. I basically knew nothing about it.

So when she finds the girl’s body in the well, I was assuming that was the end of it. Typical corny Hollywood sappy ending, right?

Then the kid says, “You didn’t help her did you? You weren’t supposed to help her!” Yikes! Needless to say, when that chicky climbed thru the TV screen, it was alarming. If I could’ve gotten any further back in my seat, I would have. I’m getting chills just thinking about it 3 years later.

What’s really bad is, that night I woke up in the middle of the night (something I never do) with a terrific thirst. I opened the door to the bedroom and the full moon was shining thru the window in the living room right on the TV. I slammed the bedroom door and decided I wasn’t really that thirsty.

I avoided Ring 2 and the Grudge (looked very Ring-like). And you couldn’t pay me to watch the Japanese version, seeing as how I’ve always heard it’s even scarier. No thanks.

I know exactly what you mean! I thought the well scene was the resolution as well. And when it went on…well, I shared your reaction.

I haven’t seen the Grudge, either…anyone got a comment about that?

I like some asian horror, but this Grudge (based on the asian movie) didnt do nothing for me. I didnt care for the acting at all and the jump scenes were highly predictable.

If you’re a fan of asian horror and dont mind subtitles, check out “The Eye” 🙂

The movie Burnt Offerings with Karen Black is pretty scary…that Hearse driver guy and his smile kind of freaked me out. Salems Lot is pretty scary too.

Joey(name removed by moderator)-I believe I saw “mark Of the Devil” didn’t they cut off a girls tongue in that movie and chopp a guy in half with giant scissors? I seen it when I was a kid,it was a movie that Elvira had on.

Them

The Crawling Eye

Night of the Living Dead (the original one in Black and White)
