I was on the Diocese of Las Vegas web site and I noticed it list Schismatic communities. The question I have is these are not really “Catholic” parishes and it does NOT fill your obligation of mass, then why are they allowed to be called Catholic Churches. I looked up some of their web sites and one even has their own Bishops and one even had the main priest a female. I am confused. Can some one shed some light on this for me.

The very bottom right, it list the schismatic parishes.

They can call themselves Catholic, but not Roman Catholic, or Ukrainian Catholic or any of the two dozen churches in union with Rome. I’ve even seen an ad in a phone book for a ‘Traditional Catholic Church’. Sounds like FSSP, right? No. They’re schismatic. Don’t go.

They’re not, according to Canon Law, allowed to call themselves “Catholic” churches. It’s unlikely they would care about that.

FWIW, it looks like some of these are private Masses. The priest may be legitimate and he may report to a bishop who’s in communion with Rome. There are Masses said in hospital chapels and retirement homes which aren’t necessarily in schism because they are not parish Masses. More investigation is required IMO.

@Svid -

The FSSP is not schismatic. They are in full communion with Rome.

I am not sure why you are confused. The list of parishes is preceeded by this-
schismatic communities
There are many other churches that list themselves under Catholic Churches. The list below are not in union with the Holy See and the Roman Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Las Vegas. Thus, these Churches are in schism. Attending Sunday Mass at any of these establishments does not fulfill the obligation to attend Mass.
It is there to serve a warning that these particular churches are not in communion with Rome. I don’t see the problem. To be Catholic, you must be in communion 🤷

I suspect it’s just a practical matter. Suing these churches to make them stop using the name will cost money, and there’s no guarantee the court will rule correctly. But there’s a LOT of tourists in Vegas, so the diocese needs to disavow these groups somewhere.

I think you misread the post. He/she was stating that something that said “Traditional Catholic Church” might make one think it’s the FSSP, but it’s really not. It’s an extreme trad gathering that is not in union with Rome.

Hey, no fair! Schismatics get listed and we don’t?

🙂

And our priest even works for the RC diocese a few days a week, including one at the chancery office . . .

St. Gabriel the Archangel (Ruthenian, Byzantine Catholic Metropolia of Pittsburgh [or whatever we call ourselves this week:)], Phoenix Eparchy of the Protection of the Mother of God [or something like that], fka the Eparchy of Van Nuys)

(and for a twist, there’s a schismatic group that broke from our parish calling itself the Byzantine Catholic Church in America, or some such. I believe at they meet at the priest’s house)

Our Lady of Wisdom, Greco-Italo, but part of the same Eparchy.

St. Sharbel Mission, actually now a parish, Maronite.

There is a Chaldean group over by Meadow’s Mall that I believe meets weekly for liturgy in a storefront.

there used to be a Romanian mission, but it wasn’t able to support a priest.

Years ago, there as an Anglican Use parish, but it’s long closed.

In another vein, these groups using the label “catholic” poses another problem. We get two or three visitors a month whose GPS finds us (we’re the closest Catholic church to the airport). Most weren’t expecting the East :), but most like us (but there was a family a few months ago who must have decided we were Orthodox; in spite of the explanations, they left partway through!).

With a slightly different geography, they could have unwittingly gone to a schismatic group.

we had one last year who had been at “our” schismatic group the week before, and never found out that it wasn’t just another of ur parishes!

We also get one or two a month from masstimes.org.

I think the issue is not fairness it is a warning to people who may go to these Churches out of invincible ignorance (ie tourists or those that may not fully recognize the difference between FSSP and SSPX or others) not to go. The diocese is doing a service out of charity.

Basically the Church holds no copyright or trademark on the word Catholic or even Roman Catholic so it can not even attempt to sue over this.

As an aside:
Which parishes in Las Vegas offer the TLM?
I mean regularised parishes such as FSSP or ICKSP?

Incidently the Holy Father has stated that the SSPX are not in schism, rather they are in an irregular state and it is an internal Church Matter. In other words “internal” they are in the Church.

Don’t you mean SSPX and not FSSP?🤷

Again, the SSPX is not schismatic, according to the Holy See.

As I do not wish to do all the work for you I will tell you how you can find out.

Go to the link in the first post of this thread. That link shows the parishes for the diocese. One of them lists a Latin Mass on Sundays. Click on that parish and you will see that it offers a monthly EF Mass.

The FSSP and ICKSP are not the only way to have an EF Mass nor are either of those groups big enough to have representation in every diocese nor have every bishop invited them into their diocese.

As religious congregations they can only enter a diocese at the invitation of the bishop.

As for the SSPX, while they may not be schismatic they do not have a legitimate ministry within the Church.

Apparently there are none save for a 1st Sat EF.

The diocesan-listed parish St Joseph is an independent chapel and the listed Our Lady of Victory is an FSSPX chapel.
Amazing!
Thank you.
I know of many people in the LV area who are attached to the TLM and want to go to it daily.
They have petitioned the pastor, Ordinary and eventuallyy the PCED for it and no help, for years.
They are forced to go to the FSSPX if they want a regular TLM.
