I have a project due for a college course in Religion next Saturday. The project calls for me to attend an ordinary service at another church. I was planning on visiting an Orthodox Church, but this Sunday is Divine mercy Sunday and it would be very difficult to make it to make etc and attend another service. This is the last Sunday that I have to do this.

My question is, would it be sinful to write the essay as if I had visited the Church even though I didn’t?

If it involves lying, which I do not see how it could not, then yes, it is a sin. You may just have to go to the Vigil Mass at your church on Saturday night, and then go to the Orthodox Church Sunday.

yes, it would be sinful and i believe it is also academic dishonesty which could be grounds for (at least) failure of the course, (at most) expulsion.

do you have to go to an orthodox church? why not go to a church with a saturday service so that you can still go to mass on sunday? or does your church have a saturday evening mass you could attend? or perhaps a sunday evening mass?

i guess i just don’t see how you can’t do both if you really tried.

Telling a lie is a sin. You already know that what you propose is wrong.

Go to vigil Mass or choose a Sunday mass and another denomination’s services that allow time for both. Or, find a Baptist church and go to their Sunday evening service. Get out your phone book and look in the yellow pages for service times and/or start calling or driving around.

Does it have to be Christian? You can always go to a Jewish synagogue on a Friday night if there are any in your area.

This should also be a lesson in procrastination. You seem to be trying to get out of going to this other service and shirking your assignment.

You are making excuses for not attending-- there are plenty of opportunities for you to both go to Mass *and *attend another service this weekend.

Yes, it would.

You would also not learn whatever it is that you are meant to be learning in this exercise.

Attend Mass on Saturday evening. Attend the other church on Sunday morning. (Pick one that finishes around noon or so.)

This will give you plenty of time to get back to your parish in time to participate in the 3:00 prayers for Divine Mercy Sunday. 👍

Some denominations have a Wednesday night service. Check around.

That was funny… I did laugh at that “if it involves lying” point. You were fairly straight to the point. However, I work and go to school full time and that means working Saturday nights. My only really day to get anything like that done is Sunday.

Do you have an afternoon or evening Mass on Sunday?

Well, I can’t. I work Saturday nights, and I’m not about to skip Sunday Mass for a Divine Liturgy.
Then you are going to have to explain to your teacher that it is not possible for you to complete the assignment, and you will have to take a zero.

Well, yes. Telling a lie is a sin. However, if I didn’t write that I attended in the paper. I didn’t plan on lying outright, or else I wouldn’t have asked. I checked for Jewish, and got nothing. I may have to go to a Lutheran Church, but I will be hurting for time.

I didn’t ask any advice on procrastination. I work overtime every week, I got to school full time, and I attend Holy Mass 5 times a week. That is my life. I spent my Spring break at work and doing future assignments. I’m not making excuses not to attend, I was the one that offered to go to the Orthodox Church to begin with. I was quite excited about it, actually. There is one priest that might be having a late Mass on Sunday evening, but I don’t know for sure.

I’ve thought about that, and I don’t want to do that. I have 5 A’s right now. A “B” would stick out a bit… haha

I don’t know where you live, but in many places there is often a Catholic Sunday Mass in the afternoon 3 or 4 PM, or in the early morning 7 AM. You might have to drive a little out of the way, but it doesn’t hurt to look. Sometime it might be a Catholic Mass in a different language, but it would still count.

Also another option would be going to a protestant/ evangelical church for your assignment, there is more than likely going to be at least one afternoon/ night service at one of them.

Sorry, this will probably upset you but I have to say it… Getting a “B” is worse than offending our Lord by sinning?

Can you ask for an alternative assignment, to do in its place, that won’t interfere with your Sunday Mass?

Well, I can’t. I work Saturday nights, and I’m not about to skip Sunday Mass for a Divine Liturgy.
but there are masses on sunday evenings as well. there are early masses and later divine liturgies. you can do both, you just have to be a little creative.

You know, alot of churches (although I have never heard of an orthodox one doing so) put their services online. Perhaps using youtube, you could watch a service, or something. Of course, that still may violate the rules of the project, but it is just a thought. In addition, you might want to see if there are any protestant denominations that have services on any other days of the week.

Wouldn’t it be possible for you to attend an early Mass on Sunday, followed by the service at the other church, later? Most Catholic parishes have several different time slots for Sunday morning Mass. If you could get up with the chickens, and attend the 7:30 or 8:00 a.m. Mass, you’d have time for a 10:00 or 11:00 a.m. service at the other church… provided you don’t have too far to drive. Just a thought.
