Hi,

I have an interest in composing music for the Mass. I was wondering if there are any good schools for learning how to do this. I would like to at least be able to master musical composition enough to help others to compose truly reverent music for the Mass.

Also, please pray to St. Cecilia, patron saint of musicians.

Thank you for any information or suggestions you can provide.

God bless you all,
Joshua

Many universities have music programs with a major in Church Music, including composition.

I would agree about finding schools/universities which offer composition, but if you have no musical background, it would do you good to take theory (you can’t be a good composer without a strong basis in music theory) and lessons in at least one instrument. I will warn, though, that sometimes once you have all the rules of composition, you may feel creatively stifled. That is a normal feeling. When you are learning, it is important to stay within the confine of the rules and that forces you to work harder

I don’t know where you are located, but I can recommend a composition/theory teacher who my husband took from for a couple of years and is a brilliant mind. I’m not sure if he is still teaching as he is older and it has been about 6 years since my husband took lessons from him. He is a Catholic convert. PM me if you are interested.
