I like the new policy in Louisiana that permits some information about Intelligent Design (and some criticism of evolution) to be taught in public-school science class.

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana, June 27, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Louisiana public school teachers can now educate their students about the theory of intelligent design and scientific criticisms of Darwinian evolutionary theory thanks to a new law signed this week by Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal.

Lawmakers were enthusiastically in favor of the Act signed by Jindal. The state Senate had passed the bill (SB733) with a unanimous vote, and the state House had approved it by a vote of 93-4.

Supporters of the law have hailed it as a great step forward for academic freedom in the face of dogmatic proponents of evolution and man-made global warming, who have mischaracterized scientific/philosophical alternatives as “religion.”

Jindal, a Catholic with a biology degree, indicated his own affirmation of the bill in a statement saying: “I will continue to consistently support the ability of school boards and BESE to make the best decisions to ensure a quality education for our children.”

ID is not a theory. They’ve effectively legalized teaching religion as science which will be a redardant for the these kids in the future.

What in Intelligent Design theory makes it religion? How is the idea that it would take an intelligent being to create complex creatures religion? It is a logical conclusion based on facts. What makes it religious in nature?

Pax Christi tecum.

First off. ID is not a theory in scientific usage.

“In scientific usage, a theory does not mean an unsubstantiated guess or hunch, as it can in everyday speech. A theory is a logically self-consistent model or framework for describing the behavior of a related set of natural or social phenomena. It originates from or is supported by rigorous observations in the natural world, or by experimental evidence (see scientific method). In this sense, a theory is a systematic and formalized expression of all previous observations, and is predictive, logical, and testable. In principle, scientific theories are always tentative, and subject to corrections, inclusion in a yet wider theory, or succession. Commonly, many more specific hypotheses may be logically bound together by just one or two theories. As a rule for use of the term, theories tend to deal with much broader sets of universals than do hypotheses, which ordinarily deal with much more specific sets of phenomena or specific applications of a theory.”

ID is not falsifiable, it is not testable, makes no predictions, produces no research, no peer review/publishing in scientific journals, and ID paper dont follow the scientific method.

ID is not a science then, it is a religion as it appeals to superstition.

A retardant in the future? How so? I have yet to see any proof that anything at all negative will happen. If there’s no legitimate science behind it, why worry? Sunday schools have been teaching kids that God created for the better part of 200 years in the US. Clearly, the implication is to abandon God, the science aspect is secondary or just not important at all.

I find it harder and harder to believe that most here are concerned about science in any way, shape or form, but have cordoned off public schools, watching 24 hours a day unless someone should attempt to ‘sneak in’ ID.

Peace,
Ed

I asked a “Catholic” scientist here on CAF about that and he really had no idea why 70% of scientists identify themselves as atheist.
Why the quotation marks, reggie? Would you identify yourself as a “Catholic”, quotation marks and all?

Peace

The quotations marks mean “self-identified”, or “a person who calls himself a Catholic”.

No, I wouldn’t identify myself that way.

Why not? We just have your word that you are Catholic. I accept your word. Do you still not accept mine?

I accept what you said, but I don’t know if it’s true or not.

Normally, I would just accept that you are a believing Catholic. But you did say …
I guess I should be happy that your idea of orthodoxy isn’t the rule for all of us.
Additionally you said:
I don’t agree with what you consider to be a good Catholic
So again, without any additional information I don’t really know what you mean when you say you are a Catholic.

Additionally, I wouldn’t say that you fully accept my word that I am a Catholic – although you may have a very broad defintion of the term.

Well, I do fully accept your word that you are Catholic.

I accept the full teaching of the Church. I believe every single word of the Creed.

You may have your own definition of what a real Catholic is, but I am confident that the Church would have no problem with my claim.

Peace

Tim

Ok, that’s all I was wondering about and that helps very much. Thanks. You seemed to question my orthodoxy so I didn’t know what you believed or not.

You’re a Catholic scientist and that is very good to know.

As I said elsewhere, I don’t want to press you on your personal beliefs or attitudes on things like how you respond to atheism or the implications of Darwinian theory with regards to Faith.

I referred to you indirectly here because I didn’t know where you really stand before. I appreciate the clarification.
