Scientists develop a pill that extends your life span by 500+ years. Would you take it?

assuming the pill offered extended youth and impervious to diseases (basically, I stay physically and mentally capable) I wold be curious to see what the world looks like in 500 years. How technology has advanced, how people act in this futuristic society, the discovries made and the places travelled to how much knowledge of our galaxy and the universe around us we have obtained, So on and so forth.

I mean, I just think of how things have changed over the last five hundred years, something like the industrial revolution only happened, what? about 150-200 years ago? the automobile, airplane, movies etc only happened in the last 100 years, then there is the internet in the last 20 years or so. I would be very curious to see how the world, society and people change in the course of that time.

No. Life seems way too long to me already. I feel like I have already lived several different lives. You might win me over IF I could pick a chronological age to go BACK to, WITH my current level of wisdom. So, if I could go back to my condition of health and vitality at age 30, and keep my wisdom gained on experience lived since then, I would consider it.

But maybe only another 50 years, not 500. So I guess my answer is still, “No thanks.”

A more interesting question is whether you would take a pill which extends your life indefinitely and keep you in good health! Those who believe there is no afterlife probably would but I regard “eternal” life in this universe as the equivalent of hell. There would be no end to evil and injustice - nor would every tear be wiped away…

I see a couple problems with this. If this pill gave us eternal life, would we live if the sun died and the earth was covered in cold and darkness. Second, if there was a pill that could keep us alive forever, It would probably dent my faith a little, because I don’t think God would intend that to happen.

The human mind is basically designed for a trajectory of one hundred years, at the most. It would be a horror, I believe.

But, if I did live for five hundred years, I would follow the following
0-100- materialist, hedonist, making enough money never to have to work again
100-200- Romanticist, idealist, Catholic
200-300 Live as an existentialist, atheist, nihilist
300-400- A Buddhist, Dadaist, Taoist
400-500- Revert to Catholicism, and live as a Carthusian.

Excellent questions! I would not take the pill because I want to get to Heaven sooner than later.

I believe you confuse the mind with its bio-somatic substrate. If the latter were centennially stable, the former would also be.

Don’t you expect to have a mind in the “afterlife?” That would be far longer than 100 years.

And if you want to end as a Catholic, why would you ever want to be a Buddhist?

Assuming I’d live in peak or close to peak physical condition, I’d take it.

As I’m only a teenager and have no basis of comparison for a hale and hearty 40 year old as opposed to a younger age, I have no idea 🤷

I think it’s safe to say you would not be a teenager for 500 years; your body would not withstand the prolonged growth spurts, hormonal surges, etc.

I would not be surprised if the “pill” were not made available before the age of 30. That was good enough for our LORD, after all.

Well, yeah we do, although the proximal cause of death will be written as something else.

When the heart muscle wears out, the body dies of heart attack.

When the lungs are too damaged to draw sufficient breath, the body will slowly shut down.

Ultimately, most human beings will die of oxygen deficiency to the brain. If the body is “old,” time-dependent entropy will have led to that final condition.

I’m just saying… even besides all that, wouldn’t it be ironic if you go through with this thing to somehow make your body immune to dying of any possible natural cause for the next 500 years, and then the next day you just get hit by a car or something. :o

Ironic beyond compare , and I am sure that there is a movie to that effect somewhere:)
