Would it be even possible to see the perimeter of the universe if light from it has not yet reached us.:hmmm:
This is often why people only talk about the perimeter of the known universe. It is possible, given General Relativity, that our universe is infinite in size. Our known universe will always be a 15-billion light-year radius sphere with us in the exact center. Just like it is for every other planet and star in the universe.

However, the big bang theory teaches that immediately after the big bang, the universe was filled with sup-atomic particles including photons lighting up everything.

Showing that thousands of years ago, even before it was understood how it could have been possible, the Genesis creation story still correct about light being created first.
I recall reading a few decades ago 😦 that early in the very hot stage of the BB, there were a lot of photons of “higher than light energy” being emitted all over the place, but they were instantly reabsorbed and therefore could not excape the primordial plasma(?). But as the universe cooled it eventually reached the point where the emitted photons were NOT all reabsorbed. And…drum roll please…the photon energy at this point of cooling was right in the middle of the visible light spectrum. Not X-rays, not heat, not microwave, not gamma ray energy, but visible light.

So let there be light in fact is correct. What a coincidence 🙂

The expected isotropies were much higher than observed. No dipole isotropy was predicted.
Mark, your numerous schoolboy errors over the last two years have given me immense amusement. Here you entertainingly go again. I think you mean to say “The expected anisotropies were much higher than observed. No dipole anisotropy was predicted”. Isotropy and anisotropy are antonyms. As written, your statements are nonsense. When corrected to make some sort of sense, they are factually wrong.
The dipole has been “filtered” out of the current CMB map, even though the dipole signal is at least 1000X stronger than the remaining signal (dubious signal processing at best).
Given that you have demonstrated over and over again that you don’t have a clue what you’re talking about, I don’t think you are in any position whatsoever to determine what is ‘dubious signal processing’ and what is not. The dipole is subtracted because it is not cosmological in origin but caused by the peculiar motion of the solar system with respect to the rest frame of the CMB (this is utterly consistent with other measurements of the motion of the solar system). It is subtracted for precisely the reason that it is a 100 times (*not *a thousand as you incorrectly state) stronger than the higher frequency cosmological anisotropy, so that we can see that fainter signal. The monopole has also been subtracted out because it is 100,000 times greater than the RMS anisotropy. A proper review is to be found here:
Hinshaw et al, First Year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) Observations: Data Processing Methods and Systematic Error Limits, ApJS 148, 63 here.
Also the dipole (and higher order multipoles) is aligned with the equinoxes.
the direction of the dipole is 171.6 degrees longitude and -11.4 degrees latitude in ecliptic co-ordinates, so, far from exact alignment. So what is your point?

This is approximately so. The temperature at that point was about 3,000K - about the colour temperature you get from a domestic tungsten bulb - not really in the middle of the visible spectrum but somewhat to the red end. (But the universe had been in existence for several hundred thousand years at that stage, so I’m not sure I see the link between decoupling and the biblical verse.).

Those same photons now form the CMB, redshifted to a very cold 2.7K and into the microwave spectrum.

Maybe I am not qualified, but Dr. Robitaille is. He has written a paper addressing the signal processing techniques used for the removal of the galactic foreground (which I referred to as the dipole anisotropy, but probably contains more than just that). Here is apart of the abstract (had to clip it to fit CA limits):

In this work, results obtained by the WMAP satellite are analyzed by invoking
established practices for signal acquisition and processing in nuclear magnetic
resonance (NMR) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Dynamic range, image
reconstruction, signal to noise, resolution, contrast, and reproducibility are specifically
discussed. WMAP images do not meet accepted standards in medical imaging
research. WMAP images are obtained by attempting to remove a galactic foreground
contamination which is 1,000 times more intense than the desired signal.

Really? He is has no qualification in physics (his qualifications are in biology and chemistry) and has spent his working life in medical imaging. Which is not to say that his ideas are necessarily wrong - but the fact is that he is NOT formally qualified in any branch of physics.

Good for him. Unfortunately, his claims about the incoherence of year to year data simply don’t stand up to the facts. Balloon, COBE and WMAP data are all consistent. He strongly predicts that the monopole of the CMB is of earth origin and that Planck won’t measure a monopole signal. He’s brave - I’ll say that for him. There’s a tiny chance that he’s right but I wouldn’t bet more than tuppence ha’penny on it. But if he is right, what good does that do your position? I fail to see how a cosmological dipole at the earth helps the geocentric notion.

Unfortunately none of these posts answer my question (and some are merely Bennett quotes that I have already shredded). The dipole is very roughly in the same direction (but not exactly in the same direction) as the autumnal equinox and consistent with other data about the peculiar motion of the solar system. What is your point? Tell us why that helps your position.

I am now confused, sorry!

How many different positions are there competing for the explanations of the “start” of being? (if that is the correct phrase)

I lost count.
  1. Big Bang (do scientists still think this is possible?)
  2. String
Are there more?

If a kind person decides to answer my questions, honestly, keep it simple for me.

THANKS!!!

As I explained above, this is an assumption.
Mark,

Not to put too fine a point on it, but it is not an assumption; it is a model. As a model it explains observed phenomena quite well–as far as I know, better than any other model. I would be interested in a reference with some detailed geometry for the 4-dimensional hypersphere embedded in 5-d space.

The primary weakness of alternative cosmologies is that they lack detail. If you look at a specific star, galaxy, or dust cloud, there is an old-universe explanation for how it got there. Young-universe and geocentric cosmologies lack such detailed explanations.

A similar thing happens in geology. If you look at a specific landform or rock formation, you can find a local geologist with an explanation for how it got there–and that explanation usually involves millions to billions of years. For the most part there are no young-earth explanations of specific landforms or rock formations.

As such, I am interested in a detailed explanation of de Sitter’s 4-d sphere model. Such an explanation should also include some predicted phenomena that can be observed.

Mark is talking about the de Sitter universe which is a solution to the Einstein field equations with a cosmological constant to make it positively curved. It is an approximation of physical space, but it unphysical because it lacks matter. So you’ll ask in vain for how it makes detailed predictions of the physical universe. Ah well.

I never said he had a “formal” qualification in physics. You said:

“… I don’t think you are in any position whatsoever to determine what is ‘dubious signal processing’ and what is not…”

I said [meant]:

"…Maybe I am not qualified, but Dr. Robitaille is in any position…to determine what is ‘dubious signal processing’ and what is not]…

And he is qualified to comment on the image processing used in WMAP. Without even getting into what he believes the CMB signal really is (he rocognizes it has the specific characteristics of east atlantic ocean water, I believe), from his extensive knowledge in image processing he is saying that if medical image analysts attempted to do what the WMAP team did, they would get erroneous results. They know because THEY CAN VERIFY IT. They know that they cannot “subtract” a signal 1000X more powerful than the desired signal and get the desired signal. They can only effectively do this by:
  1. Modifying the sample, (i.e., replacing the noise with a similar non-noisy component, i.e., proton → deuterieum - kind of hard with the universe)
  2. Know a priori the result (I suspect this category may fit, replacing the know with presume).
Signal processing is signal processing regardless if it is in space or a medical clinic. If it is impossible in a medical clinic, it is questionable (likely impossible) in space- especially when the signal left over is already near the noise level of the detector!
Tell us why that helps your position
By indicating the distinct possibility that the CMB being a big bang signal is phoney baloney (many people already likely know that, but it is not discussed in “polite company”). Exposing the trail of assumptions which deceived modern man to accept Copernicus without demonstration for almost 500 years.

Here, I found this website for you. I have not investigated it other than reading part of the linked page. Here is an extract:

*…A class of concrete examples of the holographic principle at work involves so-called anti-de Sitter spacetimes. The original de Sitter spacetime is a model universe first obtained by Dutch astronomer Willem de Sitter in 1917 as a solution of Einstein’s equations, including the repulsive force known as the cosmological constant. De Sitter’s spacetime is empty, expands at an accelerating rate and is very highly symmetrical. In 1997 astronomers studying distant supernova explosions concluded that our universe now expands in an accelerated fashion and will probably become increasingly like a de Sitter spacetime in the future. Now, if the repulsion in Einstein’s equations is changed to attraction, de Sitter’s solution turns into the anti-de Sitter spacetime, which has equally as much symmetry. More important for the holographic concept, it possesses a boundary, which is located “at infinity” and is a lot like our everyday spacetime. *
*Using anti-de Sitter spacetime, theorists have devised a concrete example of the holographic principle at work: a universe described by superstring theory functioning in an anti-de Sitter spacetime is completely equivalent to a quantum field theory operating on the boundary of that spacetime [see box above]. Thus, the full majesty of superstring theory in an anti-de Sitter universe is painted on the boundary of the universe. Juan Maldacena, then at Harvard University, first conjectured such a relation in 1997 for the 5-D anti-de Sitter case, and it was later confirmed for many situations by Edward Witten of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N.J., and Steven S. Gubser, Igor R. Klebanov and Alexander M. Polyakov of Princeton University. Examples of this holographic correspondence are now known for spacetimes with a variety of dimensions. *This result means that two ostensibly very different theories–not even acting in spaces of the same dimension–are equivalent. Creatures living in one of these universes would be incapable of determining if they inhabited a 5-D universe described by string theory or a 4-D one described by a quantum field theory of point particles. (Of course, the structures of their brains might give them an overwhelming “commonsense” prejudice in favor of one description or another, in just the way that our brains construct an innate perception that our universe has three spatial dimensions; see the illustration on the opposite page.)…

Sounds like the idea is not quite as quaint as Alec makes it out to be.

  1. Big Bang (do scientists still think this is possible?)
The Big Bang is scientifically probable - very few, if any, scientists reject the concept. The question is whether or not it was the start of everything, or if there was something before it.
String theory provides one of the possible explanations for what existed before the Big Bang. A problem with string theory is that we currently do not have sensitive enough instruments to test it properly.
Are there more?
Yes. However they are all difficult to understand. As the Veneziano article in Scientific American mentioned, the major alternative to string theory is quantum gravity. Einstein’s general relativity is a theory of gravitation. Unfortunately it is a classical, not a quantum, theory. Quantum gravity is the name for attempts to incorporate quantum mechanics into general relativity. For more on quantum gravity try Lee Smolin’s “Three Roads to Quantum Gravity”.

There is no single scientific answer in much of cosmology as there are still many open questions. That is what makes it such an interesting area of study - ideas and theories are still changing.

Oh, and another thing…

De Sitter space is a Lorentzian manifold (an analogue of a Riemannian 4-manifold) so it is modelled on Minkowski space NOT Euclidean space.

A centre cannot be defined to de Sitter space, contrary to Mark’s claim. Analogously a centre cannot be defined on the surface of a 2-sphere. So Mark has some explaining to do (if he understands the objection, that is)

Yes - but none of this contradicts what I said. It is an approximation of the physical universe under some conditions, but it is unphysical because it is matter-free.

Unfortunately if you read just a few lines on you will see this: “the allegedly preferred center… turns out to be an artifact of the stereographic coordinates.” So actually, it’s perfectly consistent with my statement that a centre cannot be defined to de Sitter space. Mark, you can’t learn or debate physics by quote mining.

I didn’t say it was quaint. I said that the de Sitter universe is unphysical because it is matter free. Which it is.

By the way, this bit of quote mining is irrelevant because it is about anti-de Sitter space - it says nothing to answer Liberian’s question.

Except that it doesn’t. If Einstein claimed that it did, he was mistaken. Even the context of the paper explains that. The supposed “preferred center” is an artifact of certain coordinate systems, and can be removed through elementary use of the affine connection. As with any center in general relativity, it is at best a mathematical artifact that results from choosing a coordinate system (much like choosing spherical coordinates to describe orbits automatically makes whatever something orbits seem like a center).
