A good article. So basically they’re saying their Sea Org is similar to a Catholic Seminary and the experience of Sea Org member is similar to that of a seminarian.

Keep in mind the case is actually about a plaintiff that was forced/coerced by the “sea org” to get an abortion. Since when has the Catholic Church ever commanded anyone to do that? Abortion is evil and the comparison/defense is absurd.

This group just gets stranger and stranger with every passing day.

Those in the Sea Org are slaves - but they don’t realize it until it’s too late. I suspect that at the end of his life Hubbard found out the same.

Hubbard* invented *Scientology. He knew it was a lie from the start, because he was the liar. It’s possible that over time he started to believe his own lies. If so, then he was in worse slavery than his followers.

Sadly her case isn’t even unusual for the Sea Org or Scientology by all accounts. Hopefully her lawyers put a nice big dent in them before it’s all said and done. Their abuse of children is obscene. And the fact it continues to this day is even worse.

I’m aware of Hubbard’s history. If you read about his last years, you’ll see what I mean. He was virtually a prisoner.

I just wanted to clarify. They are deliberately choosing to argue this because it is an attempt to invoke the first amendment rights of freedom of religion. Their lawyers are not dumb, they have used this defense before successfully. They use the Catholic Church’s overall structure and compair it to that of Scientology to show Scientology is “also a church”(hence it’s nickname “Catholic defense”). What is absolutely absurd is that it is used to defend ecclesiastical actions the Catholic Church would strongly oppose, especially in this particular case concerning abortion.

I agree with Ortega, our Church shouldn’t put up with it.

“Laura’s team now has until February 22 to file its response, and then Scientology can reply on February 29. A hearing on the motion is scheduled for March 7.”

I really wish “Going Clear” had made the cut for Best Documentary Oscar (it did qualify but didn’t make the final nominations list) because it would have been brought these forced-abortion allegations to more prominence.
