My wife is watching and in part making me watch this new series on Scientology. I have to say the things being said are extremely scary, this is being presented as almost a cult on steroids. In fact I was so shocked after last nights episode that the only thing that comforted me is the promise that not even the gates of hell will prevail against the Catholic Church.

Are there any scientologists here? Can anyone step forward and explain what is being said on tv? What is the appropriate Catholic response to these types of attacks and their determination to control everything (if indeed I am hearing things correctly)?

Yes, you are hearing these things correctly.

That said - are you asking how a Catholic responds to corroborated evidence that the Church of Scientology is complicit in (to give just one example) killing babies? Is that what you’re asking? *The appropriate Catholic response is that you take steps to stop Scientology from killing babies – I really don’t know what other response would be appropriate. ***

**"A former Scientology member made shocking allegations to Leah Remini about the church’s protocols on women having children.

Claire Headley — who was a member of the church’s elite Sea Organization for 30 years — claims the church coerced women into having abortions upon learning of a pregnancy, she alleged on Remini’s A&E docuseries “Scientology and the Aftermath.”

“If a woman got pregnant, she would instantly be scheduled to get an abortion,” Headley explained to Remini in a clip from Tuesday’s episode."**

I’ve never been a Scientologist, but when I was about 12 (that’s over 50 years ago) my best friend’s family became involved. They lived very near us so we learned a lot. I haven’t seen the show but I’ve read a couple of recent books critical of Scientology & they are right on.

My friend’s father was quite the cynic - he told my mother that Scientology was a load of bs, but it was a money-maker for him. He made e-meters & was at the level where he used them with other people. I suspect that David Miscavige has the same belief.

I doubt you would get anywhere trying to convert Scientologists, but do pray for them. With what I read about L. Ron Hubbard’s last days, I felt really sorry for the man. I feel sorry for a lot of them - so many are trapped & have been from a young age.

I believe that Scientology will eventually fall apart, so I don’t worry about them taking over much of anything.

I haven’t seen the TV show you’re talking about, but it sounds like they are sensationalizing it to some extent, because that’s what keeps viewers glued to the screen. The plain truth is not as entertaining, but would still make you want to steer clear of it.

I read an expose on Scientology many years ago, and I remember that it said that adherents who get up to the highest levels (and not very many get that far) are told that L. Ron Hubbard is God.

I do believe there is some embellishment, but I think what they are saying is more fact than fiction. I could be wrong but I really don’t think the majority of people that are involved in it actually view it as a religion but rather a way of life or a self-help system.
