My daughter’s in-laws are from another country, and were born and raised Catholic. They moved to this country 10 years ago in order to study scientolgy in more depth. My son-in-law and his siblings gave up on anything to do with that strange “religion” seeing it for what it is, but their parents -extremely nice, normal people otherwise - are still taking courses and guiding their business dealings by L. Ron’s teachings. My son-in-law isn’t ready to get back into the Church of his birth, but his siblings are going to Mass.

Has this family committed a grave sin by learning Scientology? I don’t think they have “converted” per se. I know Tom Cruise said you could still be Catholic and be scientologist as well, but I don’t buy it. I think that’s spin on his part.

My daughter is due with their first baby, and plans on infant baptism, parochial school, etc. Will her husband’s flirtation with Scientology be a detriment to their Catholic life?

I am no expert on Scientology, but I am pretty sure that it is incompatible with the Catholic Faith. Tom Cruise is no expert on the Catholic Faith. Scientology attributes power to a source other than God, therefore, it is not proper for a Catholic to also be a Scientologist.
